We hit up the Blackhawk for Friday's day trip. Six of us got there nice and early, first ones there. Some guys got their rods placed onboard before us and got the back corner where we wanted. It helps to have connections! Well, we get to the first spot and the captain decides that we should practice dropping the diamond jig and feel for bottom! I never experienced that before. Funny part was that we all were dropping and reeling over and over again for nothing. It was a spot with no fish!

Well now we move to the fishy spot and kaos ensued! Bites and tangles galore. It was great, lousy, fun, annoying, exciting & frustrating! My brother quit after loosing 2 diamond jigs & not catching one fish. He was afraid that he would throw someone overboard!

I ended up with 5 decent blues. All the blues caught were over 10 lbs. I lost 4 or 5 - fish and diamond jigs! Luckly I bought some at the Lunker City tag sale last year, so the $$ damage was less. No stripers were caught on this trip. This is probably the last bass/blues trip on a party boat for us. We had a blast, but were also disappointed. Not by the Blackhawk, but just dealing with the crowd and less experienced that let their jigs go all over. I am no pro by all means! I figure that it would be cheaper doing a party boat, but when you add up the $$ for lost jigs, rod rental & tips; It would be better to charter with some friends or family.

Sorry no pics! Totally forgot that I had the camera with me!

yeah dont think too much of the blackhawk, all the free trips they give away every week is rigged... went to a customer appreciation day and all i got was a hot dog.....fish connection really appreciates thier customers with a pig roast... all the free can goods they ask for and what not, to make themselfs look good , they could care less.. and all the bickering on board with there crew... pathetic... mijoy much better group of people.... oh by the way, they sent me a certificate saying i won a free trip then they took it back and said it was a mistake... go figure..

i love this report! the best part is the title Smile i have a small boat but i want to take it out for blues soon. i can't see going on a party boat for blues now that i have a boat of my own. 16 ft with a kicker motor is too small to go out very far though. Where did the Blackhawk go ? do you know what reef or ledge you were fishing?

Hey guys, sound like my first experiences on the sound. I got tired of it quick and started figuring things out myself. Now I own a 28' open cabin and do small charters, when I'm not working. Now that Summer is in full swing, I like to do evening striper and blues trips..but I'm very flexible. I have all the gear needed. I like to take no more than four people and prefer three for night eeling. I am licensed and have a legitimate business. My rates are very reasonable. I'm not sure how much the Head boats charge now, but I personally like to pay a little more and enjoy my time on the water. If your interested, give me a call and I'll give you some info and references. 860-716-4232 Dave

I thought we were going to fish the Race, but we were past it. I believe it was Watch Hill. We could see Fishers Island.

Likely the Race. It runs from Race Point (Lighthouse at the western tip of Fishers) to the lighthouse on Little Gull Island. You can certainly see Fisher's. I've never seen him fish east of Race Point, unless it's late in the season and he's running a Block Island cooler filler. Watch Hill and Sugar are only 8-10 ft. in depth, as well as several other shallow reefs. (You can see where boats have run aground and left scrapings!) You are also fishing a hundred to two hundred yards off the RI coast and Watch Hill Point. If he went to Watch Hill, you would have cruised right past the length of Fisher's. The Black Hawk will sometimes fish the Gut, and some of the rips between Plum Island and Black Point.

Know it's not everyone's thing, but went out last night and absolutely smoked 'em. Were there a few tangles? Yep. Had one rig cut off while I had a fish on, and another fish pulled by someone reeling down my line. He kept reeling down my line until his jig lodged in mine and de-hooked the fish. It's a party boat with differing levels of experience, so you can't really get that pissed. As others have pointed out, you can always book a private charter. I also landed a steady stream of keepers. I was able to keep my rigs on the bottom during fast drift conditions without losing any to the rocks. The results were repeated hookups. A lot of people lost rigs to rockfish or never kept close enough to the bottom to catch fish. That meant that those of us on fish could fill their quotas. Anyway, I had a lot of fun with several of the regular guys, some new faces, our mates Matt and Nikki, and Capt. Greg.
