next week should be a good week of fishing! That water will be warming up. I spoke to some fisherman today at lakeville lake... they said most people are not having much luck... Still a bit cold... Next week baby it should be on!

Saw one today on crescent lake locked on a bed- Thought it was just a 2lb skinny male so I pitched a jig at him hoping he didnt see me and was just hanging out next to some brush- got him- released him and he went right back to the beginnings of his bed I guess.

I fished Sunday at Cedar lake in Chester,....I don't think they've ALL moved up by any stretch,..but there were SOME beds,..and definitely some bass on them! I saw at least one male/female pair,...

The water was 62 degrees, a cast-length away from shore. Kinda cool for spawning still but maybe the very sunny days warms things enough with the sunlight to compensate for the cooler water (just guessing...).

Anyway, I fished and caught a few medium bass but I actually feel kinda funny catching them off the beds this season for some reason. No big morality thing and I really don't care at all if other people do or don't,..but personally, I think I might just go concentrate on river stripers until the spawn is over now.

The bass I found in the cove at Long pond were ALREADY spawned out. Guarding males, I could see the eggs on the beds. Water was about 64...

many local ponds have the fish on beds too...

Some lakes/ponds are spawning and some will be as the temperature hits that magic number. All depends on the water depth and clarity which determines how soon the water warms.

sevnseat,

I believe that magic number is about a consistent 58-62°F when the bass's instinct to reproduce goes into effect. Water temperature fluctuation will drive the bass off and on the nest until the temperature is pretty much set. Day to day temperature forcast will have an impact on the spawn. Because you say the bass are leaving the nest when you cast to them would indicate to me that the female bass has not laid her eggs yet. Most times when the nest are egg laden have I witnessed male bass stay put no matter what bait was cast near them. The only time the male would venture off is when I got too close to them with my boat.

Jim
