Headed out to some of the humps South of Green's Ledge today. Even though it was rainy and overcast, there were a ton of boats in my usual spots, but the bunker were thick and I got enough to chunk in about 10 minutes. Set down anchor and over the course of the next 5 hours I caught 3 sand sharks, too many sea robins to count, and my first two stripers of the season.

They're actually the first two stripers I've caught in about 12 years, so I was pretty psyched even though they were pretty small. Both released and swam off with vigor.

Then I got a ridiculous strike on one of my rods that sent the reel screaming like there was no tomorrow. When it came within sight of the boat I could see it was a monster bluefish. The second he saw the boat, boom, 50 yards of line gone. We played that game 5 times until he seemed pretty tired, and I tried to get him in the net, but he was too big for that. So, against my better judgement, I grabbed the mono and tried to pull him on board when he decided to run again and POP. Mono snapped and we sat there looking at each other for about three seconds then he plunged back into the deep, sending a nice spray of saltwater into my eyes. It had to be the biggest bluefish I'd ever caught, and I was kinda sad (I might've cried a little) but we all gotta learn our lessons one way or another. I still have that barrel swivel and mono leader that he tore up, and I'll keep with me as a reminder.

All in all, awesome day on the water.

I'm sorry that you lost the blue at the end. But, hey, the big ones aren't as good for eating, anyway. Wink

Was out to the Norwalk Islands on 6/8 and found lots of bunker too. We anchored up and landed a 32" striper and a "monster" 34" blue like you described
Had many run offs from stripers and bite offs from blues. With the stripers, my circle hook got turned around and lodged in the chunk instead of the corner of the fish's jaw. Frustrating to miss those solid hits.
Later, we tried for fluke but couldn't get a good drift . I hope the bunker stay around.
