Wednesday I headed down to Seaside Park. High tide for Bridgeport was schedule for 1:31pm. Started casting from the cannon around 11:45am.
Lures I played around with included the 9cm Shallow Shad Rap, 13cm purple ghost Max Rap, 8cm glass ghost X-Rap Shad Shallow, 10cm blue sardine Saltwater X-Rap, and 10cm original pearl shad Flat Rap.
Lost a fish with the Max Rap and got a surprise catch with it. Caught what you'd call either an adult snapper or baby taylor.
As for weather conditions, had a steady 10mph west wind with mostly cloudy skies. Had only 1 passing shower that lasted for no more than 10 minutes. All other showers and storms I could see in the distance around New Haven.
Once the tide started to shift, I went over to the point with the sharp bend and casted out towards West Beach. No luck there.
Went back to the cannon and then casted towards the harbor from the sandbar but no luck.
Took a break Downtown to get something to eat and drink before heading back to the cannon.
While I was casting at the cannon, I got a hit with the Max Rap but no fish on. I could tell it was a blue because of a bit of head pull while it tried to chop it in half.
Last stop during the outgoing tide was Remington. Had the place to myself and stuck with the Max Rap while casting out into the deeper waters.
Had another one of those bluefish hits and later fish on! Nice head shaking and pulling on my schoolie setup and 10 pound heavy duty mono. Took 3 short runs and then landed a nice taylor. Compared to the average 2 to 3 pound taylor I caught at West Haven back on 5/16, this taylor had some extra length and girth to it and put up a better fight. So I'd say it was more of a 4 to 5 pound cocktail taylor.
Hit the road just after 7:30pm.
Other chunkers were out there in the later morning early afternoon with mackerel and saw 1 guy get a nice 8 pound harbor. Saw another land 2 average taylors within 10 minutes of each other and another guy said he got snapped when he had a hard hit and bend. Only 1 sea robin was landed by the chunkers. |

Hey, Michael, isn't a two to three pound blue a good size to keep and eat?

That's right Phil. The best eating bluefish are the 2 to 5 pound taylors.
I kept both the one from West Haven and yesterday's taylor. I love that dark meat with the oils and fishy flavor! |

That dark meat is fat and all the toxins are stored there in the fish. Don't eat too much

After cooking it I make sure I scrape the darker stuff off. When I filet bluefish, you can see the darkish color to the meat because of the oils. |

| Mike, don't forget to trim the belly fat. It doesn't taste good and also contains toxins. |
