I got sick and tired of telling people that I don't have enough time to fish, so I made time to fish Batterson Park Pond from 9:45 am to 4:15 pm. There were scattered clouds in the sky, but the sun blazed all day. The air temperature went from the low 70s to the mid 80s, while the water temperature went from 71 to 76.3 degrees. What little wind there was blew from the south-southwest. I decided to catch a largemouth bass before trolling for walleye, so I began by throwing a white spinnerbait off of the west shore. I didn't get any hits on it, so I tied on a Bullfrog Zoom Horny Toad and threw it in the shallows over the rocks on the west shore. I got my first bite as I rounded the southwest corner of the shallows:

Whoo hoo!

I think it was a post spawn male largemouth bass, because it looked like its tail was healing up. It was a scrawny fish. Although it was 16 inches long, it weighed only 1-1/2 pounds. An average 16 inch Connecticut largemouth bass typically weighs two pounds. Shocked

I caught a short largemouth bass nearby just a few minutes later. After I got out of the shallows in the southwest corner of the pond, I began trolling a Perch Shallow Shad Rap SSR-7 and a Perch Shad Rap SR-7. Trolling in full sun can be tough and, on this occasion, it was. More than an hour passed before I finally got a hit and boated a small white perch near the beach:

As I approached the riprap wall on the north end of the pond, I threw the Shallow Shad Rap toward the shore with a rip and pause retrieve. That got me the first of many yellow perch:

A short while later, it also got me a small sunny:

And five minutes after that, it got me a rock bass:

The trolling action was slow, so I decided to throw a crawfish jig as I reversed course and made my way back from the riprap wall to the beach. I lost a small keeper largemouth bass when I failed to set the hook hard enough, but almost ripped the lips off of a decent yellow perch. When I got to the corner by the beach, I started throwing a Natural Shiner five inch soft plastic Sebile Magic Swimmer. I worked it like a dying fish on the surface. Over the weeds in the shallows near the beach, I got a hit and set the hook on what I assumed was a largemouth bass, but the fish dove for the bottom. I thought, "No freakin' way!", as I reeled in a walleye Shocked

It was only a 16 incher, but it was the first walleye that I've caught this year by casting a lure, instead of trolling it. Very Happy

I ended up catching five largemouth bass, all but the first of which were shorts, the one white perch, seven yellow perch, the one sunny, three rock bass and the one walleye. With any luck, I'll have time to fish next week. Wink

I just went out to Batterson tonight from around 7:45 until 9:30 until I saw a bunch of lightning coming in so I quickly got off. I ended up with 3 fairly good sized white perch, 2 rock bass and my second walleye of the year which was only 15 1/2 inches. My friend got 5 white perch, 2 rock bass and 1 largemouth.

Trolling a Rapala definitely works better in the evening or at night. Full sun sucks!

I fish there every Thursday, Calico Bass was hitting everything lol
