fished west haven sandbar friday evening from 7pm till 9pm
wind was blowin hard and the seas were kickin.Lots of seaweed in my line but managed the one 5lb blue on a mac chunk.went back out this am for 5 hours and didnt catch anything.guys down a little ways managed a few nice size blues.I hope to get out at least a night or two this week but with this weather i dont know.Hopefully a small window will open up

you fishin the sandbar across the street from Captain's Galley?
I went out there earlier in the season, around the middle of March, and didn't get anything at all.

I've heard good things about that channel, but I never had any luck.

i am from west haven and have fished there before but I cant remember what tide is best.

I have gotten stuck out there and had to wade in a small river up to my neck. Id rather avoid that. Can you go at low tide and walk on sand?

Mikey,

Sometimes it's better just sticking with the beach instead of wading on the sandbar, unless all the fish are at the sandbar.

Whenever you are fishing straight from shore and the water has a quick drop off, last 2 or 3 hours of incoming and first 2 or 3 hours of outgoing is your best bet. West Haven Beach is one of those places that has a quick drop off near shore.

the sandbar i am talking about extends out to the mouth of NH harbor. You kind of have to wade to get to it if its flood tide but once youre on it its all sand. You have to walk down a trail to get to it.

You could cast from the shore of the sandbar, thats what i do. I dont wade once i am out there.

Where are the drop offs from shore in west haven? There are a lot of beaches here. The ones near me are all long gradual sandy flats.

Around Oyster River there are some rocky shores and I have gotten stripers there but you have to walk out on jetti like rocks to get out to deeper water. Thats fine at the right tide but can get dangerous when the rocks get submerged.

Yeah, the sandbar you can even see from 95.

West Haven Beach, the beach that eventually leads to the sandbar, has a quick 2 to 4 foot drop off. I've had times where I have my waders on at the beach on the incoming and carefully take a few steps forward and get a good feeling of that 2 foot drop off. Very much like the western side of Penfield Reef.
