I found some stripers at both Bartletts and BP during the day this week so hopefully they are here to stay.
I'm going to assume you're planning on fishing the actual reefs, 3 waying the eels. I don't mean to sound condescending but are you asking how to fish the eels? Just in case here is how I fish them on the reefs.
Keep them cold with a frozen water bottle, it slows their metabolism down and makes them easier to handle. Use a rag to put them on the hook through the lower jaw and out the top. If you hook them too high up, near the eyes, it goes through their brain and kills them. I like them lively but will fish the dead ones too.
Enough lead to hit bottom, 2 cranks up, keep dropping down and resetting the depth every 15 seconds or so and hold on. I prefer a 7/0 circle hooks...bow to the cow when you feel the striper suck in the bait. (almost put the rod tip in the water) then lift the rod tip up when you feel the weight of the fish. Remember not to set the hook.
Hope this helps. Have fun and good luck! |

No condescension at all. I haven't been eelin in years but i'm goin with my bro who has been a little more recently. We will be using 3 ways and we are relatively confident that we want to go for the strippers on the flood tide thats why were goin out around 4. While every piece of information is helpful i was more asking towards if the bass r running yet and if i would be in the right area and you also answered that one to i appreciate it. Hopefully we will be able to hook up tomorrow morning. |
