i would ...put on some 50lb BRAID--barrel swivel---wire leader or titanium leader (xxxpensive) and hold on for a true RIVER MONSTER!!!!!!
Can i Join you guys on the Mattabassett next go around?? I got the skunk there in earl y March..and took a dive into the mattabessett by accident..boy was that water cold.....just ask PECO(phil)....

What a day.. I should say two days.. Started late last night with a buddy of mine.. we put in at the Cromwell D&D. We caught our first pike within 200 feet of the launch, measured 20inches. From there we started catching 16 to 20 inch pike regularly for a hour at the end of the outgoing tide.
I do have to say, That river has such an abundance of species and them northern pike Love it in there. When the northern pike weren't hitting we where catching largemouth and white perch regularly.
We ended last night after dark and took in close to half dozen pike and same in bass and perch.
Then we went back out today, 1:30 to make the outgoing tide again, and WOW. well i had an experience of a life time... First cast again 200 feet from launch i caught a small pike. then at one of my favorite trees a few bends down, I had a strike on a White rooster tail that litteraly sent chills down my spine int he kayak.
8 pound test, with a rooster tail on a medium bass rod, ugly stick.. I pulled up on this fish after he took the lure, and i could barely move him. to try and get him to start the battle i set the hook with a good side set away from him and all hell broke loose. This think stripped out over 30 yards of line and i pulled as hard as i could, felt that line wanting to break. he turned and came back at the kayak.
at this point i am now just fighting with him under the kayak and i couldnt get him to come up.... Aprox 5 or 6 min into the fight i finely got him to come up along side of the kayak for a few moments. easy 35+ inch pike almost half the length of my kayak. what a experience. this guy took one look at me we stared at eachother for a few moments, then he soaked me and snapped off. leaving me with this.> A story.. but man did that feel good. and my buddy was right next to me to experience it...
I will be spending a lot of time on that river this year....
thanks for the inspiration to go try for a new predator fish.. Im having the time of my life out there... And now i know there some monsters in there. Im upping my gear a bit and im going on the hunt.

Nice man!!! Nothin like fightin some good sized fish in close quarters! try a 7 foot med. heavy or heavy action bass rod, like a flippin stick or something like that with 30lb braid and 30-40lb flouro leader! That should get em' in the boat! Good luck- Dan |

I plan on hitting this river up every week, so far my fav time is on the outgoing tide. Any time you want to join me on the river, your more than welcome.... I will post to this thread that next time im taking a ride over there.. I would have gone today but some friend hit me up early to plan a game of golf..
so possibly during the week i will hit the river up int he evening.
I will make sure to let you know...
Im noticing that they absolutely destroy White Roostertails and Black Roostertails. with silver blades. Dozens of strikes already after only two times out this year for pike. Successful both times.. Cant wait to get back out... |

my shoulders outta commission for at least a week, but i'll meet you guys there sometime, i would probably drive my boat up from the ct river tho, or invite my friend with his 2 person yak, lmk -Dan  |

| Hey basstrapper I'm new to Middletown and looking for a local public boat launch. What launch are u referring to when you said "Cromwell d&d"? |

Hes talking about the dunkin donuts in cromwell, small river tho, you cant launch a ''real'' boat there, kayaks and canoes or small shallow running boats that you can carry in only, there is no launch and the river is extremely shallow |

Yes Thats the area im talking about... You can really only launch kayaks or canoes. if you have help you can load a small two person boat there. Wouldnt recomend it. if you can carry your vessel you can launch it basically. gotta get down 3 steps and a small path thats about 20 feet to the water.
Id say you would have to find a spot on the CT river to put in, and on the high tide you can get a pretty big boat up that river almost to the launch at d&d, i see bass boats all the way up fishing along side me for bass and now my new challenge, Pike..
Im sure i will find a day this weekend to go out.. Looking forward to finding another 30+ inch pike. gonna keep trying...
I post up when i know im going.. maybe see you guys out there sometime... |

| get em' soon, the water is warming up quickly and they will soon be dormant for the warm months, the big pike lie motionless for days on end on the bottom, you can can still catch small pike in the summertime but the big ones become very innactive |

The river is definitely getting warmer quickly. Last week the surface temp was in the upper 60's to lower 70's.
