Launched the tourney at 8:00am. Started around the west side of the islands. Chartreuse/Pepper Flake 1 1/2" tube on a 3/16 ball jig. Started my day. At least I thought. Hooked my first smallie. About 2lb's. Brought it to the boat and snap just as the net went under. The fish then proceeded break top water for the next 20 minutes until I saw it shake the lure. Smallie #2 20 minutes later. Brought it to the boat and Adios Amigo is all she said as she spit the hook and slowly swam away! Ah!!!!!! #3 20 minutes later to the boat and the knot unties! Dah!!!!!! 20 Minutes later I land #4. About 2.5 Lbs. Bite dies. Hit a bunch of spots. At about noon a brown 1 1/2" tube landed 5 for my partner for a total weight winning the event at 14.9 Lb.s with the winning lunker smallie at 4.49 Lbs.
Off the water by 1PM.
The smallie spawn is definitely done although we spotted numerous beds and caught hang arounds in 10 FOW. We came across a few Large Mouths digging their beds with the female not far away but we couldn't get them to hit anything.
Water Temps were 54 deg. Overcast all day and mild breeze.
One bag of five came in all on Chartreuse/White Spinner Bait. Rappala's (Crank and Stick) did absolutely nothing. And we tried every combination in our arsenal.
The Large Mouth are just starting to come up out of the depths on Candy and a few more deg's warmer the fishing should pick up quite well.
For now small finesse and very slow casting to shore in 20 FOW seems to be the trick as you reel back to the boat. _________________ Don't hold your farts in! They travel up your spine to your brain and thats where shitty ideas come from.

No! Gitzit 3" Chub Tubes in Chartreuse w/pepper flake in the am and darker ones after noon worked so well we never switched. _________________ Don't hold your farts in! They travel up your spine to your brain and thats where shitty ideas come from. |

Smallmouth Spawn was done on the 6th huh.....
well I guess us winning the Keitech Open on the 4th AND the Scholarship open on the 5th fishing exclusively for spawning smallmouth was a fluke.
The smallmouth spawn is STILL going strong on Candlewood and you can literally catch 100 2 1/2 lb smallmouth off beds every day you go out there right now.... _________________ Well....I guess I'm here too! |

Did I not insinuate the Small Mouth was still gong pretty good? I was on the lake for both events! (Pre Fishing a event) You and my partner were some of the lucky ones to win! They may have been near the beds but defiantly not on.
Congrats on both wins!
and if you think about it we tournied after both your events, won and still hit our limits! And hit them pre fishing during your events! Whats your point? _________________ Don't hold your farts in! They travel up your spine to your brain and thats where shitty ideas come from. |

"the smallie spawn is definitely done" was the comment i was referring to.
We caught EVERY fish looking at them on beds over that weekend and even the following weekend.
They aren't close to done spawning, even now.
AS far as your PM about a cartridge......i don't have one active. the only PM i have about such a thing is from a "cjlovi" from January of this year.
Not sure when you sent me this "message" or what site it is on...but I dont recall ever seeing it. _________________ Well....I guess I'm here too! |

you guys are too much! - the small smouth SPAWM is DONE AND OVER! - the only reason you are catching bass off the beds NOW is because they ARE DONE spawning and the fish you are catching are NOW guarding the beds! during the last couple of weeks of APRIL and the first week of may the THE WATER TEMPS were so cold that the fish went off the beds! -- yes you could probably catch 100 fish a day off beds BUT these fish ARE NOT FEMALES! loaded with eggs! they have been gone for weeks! - 2.5 smallies should be the clue! |

Are you guys all 12 years old? Sheesh!
Smallies don't all spawn at the same time and a female smallie will typically spawn more than once. Since eggs mature and hatch anywhere from 2-1/2 to six days after spawning and there are still smallies on beds all over Candlewood, I think that it's safe to assume that some smallies are still spawning there. Largemouths typically spawn about 10 days after smallies. Today, I saw very few largemouths on beds, but many, many smallies on them. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

WOW...your so right. I'll take that advice while I'm counting the THOUSANDS of $$$$ i've won this spring fishing SPAWNING fish on Candlewood. But i'm good with you thinking that they are "done" ... more "done spawning" fish for me to catch. We don't bed fish for "females" when fishing spawning fish....your fishing for larger males. Females are a bonus when you catch them and you CAN NOT target femals during the spawning process. Hence the reasong that last year's opens this time of year that were Pre-spawn saw literally hundreds of bass over 4 lbs weighed in. This year in the 8 tournaments I've fished on C-wood with most being 30+ boats there has been one smallmouth over 4.5 lbs weighed in....
Bottom line bud.....we are fishing for the biggest males...and many of them that we are catching were NOT there the day before (the bed wasn't' there) ...these are NEW fish just coming up to spawn.
But what do i know....

I was there the same morning for a club t out of squantz. If you weren't on 3lb fish you werentc catching um. Myself and my non boater had 40 fish between us and I would of had 16+lbs instead of the 12 and change I wieghed, lots of pre spawn/spawn largemouth being co operative but I couldn't manage a 2.5+lber off a smallmouth bed, saw one or two that were new/sketchy but they were gone by the time I came back so I'm sure someone got um.
I'm defiinately enjoying the mixed bag of smallies/largies and all different waves of spawn/prespawn/postspawn. It is foolish to say there done though, I won a T with 15lbs there last year fishing spawning smallies in mid june. Its also extremely foolish to argue with dusty about fish.... he's the best young angler I know and has no problem swinging it out with guys who have 5x the experience on cwood.
Felt I had to chime in, and he's alsways responded to my texts/pm's as well. |
