Thats exactly what it took that day to get on fish. The first two hours barely produced fish. Once it was evident bass weren't really gonna chase a spinnerbait or a swimbait. It was time to slow things down. So we started crawling a worm and our luck changed dramatically. I was gonna string that calico up and eat it. But it was the first fish caught and I am not sure I wanted a fish hanging off the side of the boat giving off stress signal. We should have weighed it. I am gonna try to attach a pic of the best lmb of the day. I cant get a pic on here to save my life. Its in my gallery here, under mikejiggen. Its the one labeled Lake Saltonstall 5-6-2012. If anyone would care to tell me how to put a pic on a post i would appreciate it.

Hey, I am sure this one is wide open for debate. But I want every possible thing in my favor to catch fish. Stressed or injured fish give off a chemical, chondroitin sulfate, which causes a negative effect to any fish that may smell it.

It's a good theory but there is a lot of research to be done about it and still many unknowns. For instance a release of chondroitin sulfate released by one species of fish may not be distinguished by another species, i.e. a crappie and largemouth bass. They may be in the same family, Centrarchidae, they are both of different genus and species. The said sugar would also not have an effect over a vast area and just be prominent in a limited zone.

Why take a risk...mightas well not risk it and just release the big fella to get even bigger...i'm strictly catch and release anyways so that was a win for me, but of mike wanted it I was going to let him have it.

Exactly, why take the risk when its unknown and could "possibly" reduce my catch. Its like chumming a negative chum??? No? Like I said, Its open for debate.

That brings another point into view, if fish were scared away due to this excretion, why do most game fish strike and eat injured baitfish? And attracted to them. . .

I think that the sound of a stressed or injured fish would attract more fish, as long as the fish were a predatory species. How else would you explain the development of the Hydrowave?
Quote:
The HydroWave™ is a patented electronic sound device that emits the natural sounds of bait fish and predatory fish feeding on them. Together the sounds produce an instinctive response in nearby predatory fish such as large mouth bass that can hear the sounds and feel the vibrations of the sound waves in the water. By doing so, the fish are drawn in the direction of the HydroWave more eager to strike bait. This device is intended to give fishermen a considerable advantage in catching a greater number of "keeper" fish.

Hanging a crappie on a stringer in the water beside your boat might be a poor man's Hydrowave! Laughing

BTW, I'm not a fan of the Hydrowave. I think that it's kind of cheesy to use it. But KVD doesn't listen to me. Rolling Eyes

Thanks Paulie but that 22 pounder caught in Japan probably could. That bass was a monster.

Its honestly unreal...they stocked that lake full of bass a few years ago for support fishing and they have thrived ever since...that's what happens when we mix up ecosystems. All that Japan has is stupid giant catfish and snakeheads.
