I went down to the train bridge by Bart's in Windsor yesterday looking for some shad with a buddy of mine. I haven't got one yet on the Farmington this year after a couple of trips on the boat trolling by Loomis. Went out at about 6:15pm and it was pretty slow. Water was above the base on the train bridge but low enough to stand on the shore off the rocks. We both got an alewife before 7 and after 7ish we both got our first shad of the year. Finally got the skunk off our rods. Both came on willow leafs, one gold one silver. Now I got the itch.

Ignorance at its finest right there! I know a handfull of guys that fish the farmy for shad. Mainly using willowleafs. If you think for one second an alewife isnt or wouldnot hit that same willow leaf.........well then you got some homework to do bud! Whats almost as amusing is that you think this kid is hear bragging about "targetting" alewife. Rolling Eyes Not a good way to start off bud.

It doesn't sound like he was targeting alewife. Just caught one while fishing for shad. I've caught them before in Keeney and just release them. You are not allowed to keep them or use them for bait.

ha ha, I don't target the alewife or use them for bait. I just tend to catch a lot of them with a few shad mixed in here and there,

Hey, Vip Boat Guy said "if". . . . Rolling Eyes

I've never caught either an alewife or a shad. I guess that I'll have to head down to Bart's. Laughing Thanks for the report!

i find that i get WAY more alewives than shad when im targeting shad... can't help what's gonne hit it.

it's like tryin to "target" fish with nightcrawlers... gotta good chance at hittin everything else with fins and gills in the process...

btw, glad you're havin better luck with the shad than i am Sad

It is not illegal to catch alewife, they simply must be released.
