Caught my best bass this year today at Dayton pond as I worked a wacky natural green senko. I waded through the water over a slippery submerged concrete dock to an old piling to free a snag I caught. Once there I decided to cast since I now had some new angles. I casted about 10 times and got one thump or so I thought. I was about to go change colors or lures but decided to cast once more. On this cast I felt something not hit it overly hard but kind of just take it and swim so I set the hook hard. I faught this bass for a little but wanted to get it in my hands asap. I finally saw it and quickly stuffed my whole hand in its mouth with a death grip because now I had to walk back over the slippery concrete. On top of this as soon as I grabbed the fish my swivel broke. But I quickly made my way back and called my grandpa down the street who just got home from spending winter in FL to come see my fish and take a picture since I couldn't get a good one with my phones front camera. After I let this fish go I started fishing again and got a hit relatively fast just as the senko hit the water. I adding Ed it was another bass and to my surprise it was a good sized catfish. What a weird fish to get on a senko. And that its how my before dinner hour and a half of fishing went. _________________ You know it was a good day when your thumb is all scratched up. |

Well for starters I change lures a lot and It was already on there and I only brought one pole with me today. Plus I left my stupid multitool in the car so I couldn't trim line when I needed to. _________________ You know it was a good day when your thumb is all scratched up. |

Gotcha. I personally don't use swivels 95% of the time in freshwater situations unless I have some kind of rig that has a swivel above a leader etc. The only time I might use them for terminal tackle is with lures like floating rapalas that don't have split rings. I know people use them but I don't trust them. I'd rather have it be my own knot than a mechanical failure of a snap/swivel and like you explained yours broke. I got good at tying knots and I trust mine. To each his own I guess. Just trying to help you avoid losing the next big one _________________ Never give up! |

I personally don't use them either in freshwater but for a slightly different reason...I have a feeling fish can see them...I do however use them in saltwater all the time. I use a lot of 3 way swivels too..kinda have to in salt. _________________ Steve |

Well I started the year tieing but I quickly got sick of it...however when I fish the backwaters of the Indian river in Florida I actually tie all my knots. You can't use swivels in the saltwater down there it actually does spook the fish...especially when free lining shrimp if u check my gallery u can see some of my Florida catches. I only have a few pics though the rest my grandparents have. _________________ You know it was a good day when your thumb is all scratched up. |

Little thing I noticed too is that the senkos sink faster with the swivel which is nice. _________________ You know it was a good day when your thumb is all scratched up. |

And the swivel gives it more action.... Sometimes I use a ball bearing swivel to give the bait some extra sink and a super free fall. _________________

sap I guess fish of the sea have poor eye site compared to freshwater fish =P
I usually have a snap swivel on one rod for quick changes..
Snap swivels can damper movement on some lures
Though simple barrel swivels may give a bit more action.
Snap swivels and barrel swivels also help to eliminate line twists. _________________

I think sometimes swivels give bait too much action (ie. rollovers) or unnatural action. Sometimes I do use them but it's rare for me. Glad to see I stirred up some replies from other people on this. I was interested to hear some other opinions. Sorry to hijack your thread rmnflint _________________ Never give up! |
