Got out first thing in the morning today with CarpFishin860 (Mike) and our other buddy Bryan. Managed to get out on the water a little b4 6am, but didn't have any action for the first 45 minutes or so. Some play here and there, then finally Bryan hooked up with this fish:

Not huge, but a decent size. maybe a mid teens fish. This is the sweet new net Mike and Bryan went out and bought strictly for carp fishing

Long handle and a fine mesh to prevent injury to the big fish. Anyways, continued fishin and I hooked up with a darker carp, somethin we don't see too often

There were a few more small ones caught through the day, not worth takin a photo of. maybe 5 or 6 pounders at best. Though Bryan did manage to pull this out:

A nice little rainbow trout! never know what you're gonna get out of the river and it's tributaries!
I managed one more fish that reached double a double digit weight

That was really it for the day. Not a fish for a long while. I landed 4, Bryan landed one. Lost a few in the mix. And mike only had one little petunia under his belt. A one-hander maybe 5lbs. As we were contemplating leaving, mike's drag started screamin, and he managed this fat little 18 pounder

All in all, it was a halfway decent day. Nothin big enough to brag about, but still good to get out and hook up. We'll be back there soon.

Remember, carp fish-in comin up soon. If you think these are pretty big fish, come try your hand at hittin fish into the upper 20's or even 30 pound range!

What did u use for bait

Some nice fish. Ive been fishing all day for trout and syripers with not much to show but a few small rainbows. Hopefully I can join up with you guys 1 of these days and try that but Sundays are no good cor me. Will have to be a Saturday.

Peco: not hard to do, especially if you have a small anchor to keep you from drifting, as your bait can't be moving or it'll spook em. arm yourself with a small thing of oatmeal, a can of sweet corn, and a loaf of wonder bread, or at least a few pieces if you already got it in your house. cost ya what, maybe 5 bucks??

toss on a size 2 or 4 hook, couple of pieces of corn and/or some small balls of wonder bread. throw the oatmeal in a bucket and add just enough water to make it into balls, and mold a ball of it around your weight. lower it down to the bottom and just occasionally toss some corn oatmeal and bread overboard where your bait is.

i know we can make carp fishin sound really complicated, and it can be. but it doesn't have to be. that ball of oatmeal around your weight is gonna break up and make a nice pile of free food near your bait, and the free offerings you toss overboard are gonna help draw em in. bring a book for the wait. without a pre-baited area, it could be a while.

haha, no you don't necessarily need a "hair jib"

we use em, because it allows us to do certain things you can't do without it. such as using boilies, or using a string of maize or sweet corn. boilies are an egg based dough, boiled to get a harder consistency. if you try putting that on the hook, it'll either crack and break on ya, or it's gonna cover the entire hook. and if thats the case, idc what you do, you'll never get a hookset like that.

using a string of maize, you're able to put 3, 4 even 5 or 6 pieces it on depending on how long your hair is. and when using maize, it's a little harder and a little more brittle, so sometimes it breaks if you try to put it on a hook. where as sweet corn is softer and goes on quite easily.

so no. you don't need a "hair jib" but to increase your odds of sticking bigger fish on a more consistent basis, yes, you definitely want one.

Great info, LOL< I saw a guy snag a decent dark carp today in the housy striper fishing. Caught it in the side with a big swimmer!

what type of water should I be fishing in to catch those carp?? slow moving? shallow? I am all over the farmington and south windsor to enfield area. I want one of those!!!!!!!

i like to fish for them shallow. anywhere that the currents not super strong. back coves shallow sand bars. just make sure you have enough weight that your baits not moving down river ! on the river that can be from 1oz to 3oz. i would definitely spend the time and learn the hair rig. carp are way smarter and more finicky than most fish I've come across. two years ago i was at the st lawrence river in upstate NY right across from canada for a week. the water was so clear i could see the carp come up and waft all the corn, boilies and oatmeal chum i was using with their fins and they could tell which ones had hooks and which ones did not even with the hair rig without a problem it took a hugh group to start a feeding frenzy before i got any ! so don't go too light on the chum. you want to use a high nutrient bait the better for u it is the more they like it thats why corn, bread , and oatmeal do work great. i like to put the chum in a ball around the hook or the whole leader and hook and weight so it doesn't get twisted all over its self when i cast it. i use but u don't have to!! two 10ft daiwa surf rods with daiwa bite and run bait runners rod holders and a couple of electronic alarms works great !!! when i find out how to post photos easier ill get some up
