Fished the naugatuck river for a few hours today. Started at becon falls, but i got nothing, not even a hit. moved down a bit down to under the green bridge where i normally get some trout but still nothing! Decided to move down to seymour. I was using a daredevil, and then wham i got a huge hit, i thought it was going to be a nice smallmouth, but i was shocked when i pulled it out and it was a lamprey. I also got a decent smallmouth on a cotten cordell. At least i didnt get skunked.

Yep, I have pulled many small mouths out of the naugy especially under that bridge you speak of and have been having that same luck for trout you speak of in the naugy this year! Whats up with that? Last year I was slaying them in many spots around here. This year I havent gotten one trout out of there. Opening day I caught 4 tiny small mouths under the bridge and thats it. WTF!!!!!!!!

Did you kill the lamprey or throw it back? What's the proper etiquette with them, anyway?

That's really interesting, I have always wanted to kayak below the falls and fish from there all the way down to the next dam you can see from route 8

good question.

the proper etiquette, as with any fish, is to treat it with respect.

the lamprey is a native fish in CT. they fill an important nitch in the enviroment and the aquatic ecosystem. like any other fish, wanton waste shows poor taste among your fellow fisherman, and when viewed by non-fisherman, makes us look bad.

let the lamprey go. they are here to spawn, and die shortly after. they provide a food source, much the same way the feed upon other food sources.

in other words they are "part of the circle".

also, a spawning lamprey makes a very cool half hour to watch. the colors are wonderful; a bright turquoise with heavy spotting sometimes, pairing up and writing after forming a pyramid shaped nest. no they dont bite you, they will hardly pay you any mind while in the process of spawning. ive wittnessed it in the salmon river, and am happy to hear fish are making it up and doing what nature intended into the naugatuck.

also, i appreciate the report on naugy smallies. id be very interested in finding more about the habitat and timeframe these fish strat to show up. i woudl think they are full on pre spawn right now, and on fire over the next 3 weeks with a small jerkbait.

There's a dam to get up into that river, how would lampreys get up into it after migrating from the ocean, I am pretty sure there is no fish ladder.

Would you say the same if snakeheads started to appear in CT waters?

The smallies have already spawned I belive as like I said on opening day I was catchinv nothing but baby smallmouths on every lure I threw out. I saw a bunch of splashes across thd river so started tossing over there thinking they were trout. All through High Rock park and through Beacon Falls there are lots of Small mouth. I was catching really nice size ones righg before the season closed for trout stocking.

Hi,

No offence -> but WHY Question

If you catch one, then that means they're breeding and "THAT'S SUPER BAD" Exclamation

Catch one -> KILL IT Exclamation -> Give it to DEEP and tell them where you caught it!

Have to keep these out of our waters or they'll do serious damage Exclamation
