Hey all, my question is whether or not it is illegal to carry expired flares on a
vessel even though you have the appropriate unexpired ones. I could swear i
read somewhere that it was illegal to do so. People always say "keep the old
ones as backup", but why not just buy more NEW ones? Couldn't find anything
in the CT Boater's Guide stating it is illegal so maybe I answered my own
question. Anyone know for sure??? Thanks |

That's actually a real controversial question but this is what I've been told...
I have several buddies that go out in coastal waters and get inspected all the time for safety checks. The message that I tend to hear is it is okay to have them on board, but they need to be kept separate in a container or so marked "expired". In addition obviously make sure you have the right amount of non-expired flares as well and visual distress signals. Hope that helps. If not you can always dispose of them by contacting the boating division.
