So since today was opening day I figured I would try something different and hit Jordans Cove in Waterford/Niantic. I got out there around 9am and fished till about noon. The fog was unbelievably bad which made it hard for me to take my boat out too far. I went out to about the mouth of the cove and hit a few other spots. Not much luck, only thing I caught was this alien life of a fish...
Kidding, but yeah looks like an ugly skate. I used both sandworms and smelt. Somewhat dissapointed and not really used to saltwater fishing so a lot was new to me. As I started to head back it started to clear up a bit. I fished 20-40ft of water. _________________ Steve |

I know you can eat rays which are the same family, but that's an ugly fish. |

Last year there was an edition of Fishermen's magazine that talked about "Tasty Trash". One of them was the skate.. |

Hi,
For decades imitation scollops have been punched out of the wings of Skates and they make an excellent fin soup -> same idea as shark fin soup which is considered a delicacy!
Now about Searobins -> Over 50 years ago my uncle Ed would chop off the tails -> skinned them and pan fried them -> Super sweet mild white meat!
So if you get into them -> keep them! -> Delicious!

Were I go Bluefishing a few guys take the Robins. Same thing, the meat near the tail and they make soup I think. _________________ There's a fine line between fishing....

Sea Robbins (gurnard as the australians and europeans call them) are actually very good eating. Often used for a boulabase. |
