I was standing on Point Road in Keeney Cove this morning when the water stopped flowing into the cove and hit what I presumed was slack high tide at 9:40 am. I was watching the flow of the water through the culvert that runs under Point Road. However, the tide tables all say that the high tide hit Old Saybrook at 3:36 am. There's no way that it took 6 hours and 4 minutes to hit Keeney Cove after it hit Old Saybrook. I think that it should probably have taken 4 hours and 10 minutes. Could the brisk north wind have had anything to do with it?

A site that links to tide tables for 2008 doesn't answer my question. Laughing

Hi Phil,

Google up "NOAA Tide Predictions"

Click on for Connecticut -> Will be 2012 tide predictions.
Click on "South Hartford" as that is closest to Keeny Cove.

Your correct there is about a 4 hr 10 minute difference between Saybrook Point high water and South Harford high water -> this must be added (+) to Saybrook Point high water time.

Tides and Currents is part of my professional expertise so if you need additional help just let me know so I can help !

Stephen, I already know how to use a tide table. My question concerns why I directly observed the slack high tide at Point Road in Keeney Cove two hours after the table says it should have occurred.

Hi Phil,

That's easy -> The constriction of the water-way will cause the water to intrude slower.

Simple physics my friend !

Narrower the entrance the slower the cove will fill or dump
Wider the entrance the faster it will fill or dump.

Now THAT makes sense. It's definitely something to keep in mind for small coves. Thanks, Stephen.

Based on what I saw today, Kyle, just add 6 hours to the times for Old Saybrook on the tide tables.

Gee, why not? Embarassed Sorry about that.

I've always found that these charts need to be adjusted to real time anyway but here is another one I have for the Hartford area. I rarely fish up that way and obviously need to update my tide tables.

The tides are sometimes very tough to predict at Keeney. I've been there and fished for several hours at a slack high tide before and the water never went down. The only thing I could figure is that they maybe released water from MA at the same time the high tide was hitting and it never dropped. Not sure though. Other times I've only seen it slack for minutes and it starts flowing the other way.
