Saw a real bigun in the shallows at a local pond today. Just so happened I brought a noodle to a gun fight. I was fishing from shore just testing out my trout gear so I had my UL rod 4lb FL tied on a small chatterbait. I caught a couple smaller bass on the chatter bait when I looked out the corner of my right eye and there was a big big bass had to be 24" easy sitting in a brush pile in the junkiest of junk in maybe 10" of water. I had to look twice and I got a real good look when it twitched its tail a bit that it was huge. My gut told me to tie on a brush hog or a jig an hop it right in front of her. My dumb brain said, the fish is there now and the chatter bait is working. Brain won and lost in one cast. The chatter bait hung up on an underwater branch which spooked the fish enough to make it swim away. Now I don't know what would've happened if I hooked that big in on my Trout setup but I imagine it would've been epic. If only I went with my gut. Instead I just (figuratively) punched myself in the gut.

Lessons learned: You can never be too prepared to fish and Trust your gut.

I've been through plenty of those times too.

Have the guts to cast with a nice lure into a productive spot but have a better chance of getting the lure caught.

I will go back and catch that fish. Just gotta have the right gear. I did have other gear but it was 1/2 a mile away in my car. I usually post where I fish but this time it was Unrevealed in hopes that I'll get back there in a couple of days and let you all know the deal Smile .... To be continued ..... I hope ...

I've lost lots of my fav Rapala lures in my best fishing grounds from shore. Just trying to get the lure to go in a certain path and land where I need it to land when there's plenty of trees and bushes around there.

From my history, I have different ways of trying to get it back right after getting the lure caught. I have had more success getting it back than losing it. But I once fell in the water and pulled my right shoulder tendon when I was trying to get a productive Rapala Shallow Shad Rap back. I saw the lure right next to me when I came up from the water.

LOL, that souds like a story that my brother tells on opening day at the Hitchcock chair factory! He said there were people shoulder to shoulder and everyone was losing lures in 1 particular spot and finally this other guy got hung up there also and went in after it. He went completely under and it was still freezing that year and came up with a huge log and this thing was just covered from end to end gleaming with lures! Everyone was screaming with enjoyment! Must have been a site to see.

Let's hope you're going there today with one thought in mind.. one that doesn't involve powerbait or roostertails.

Went back this afternoon.

Sealed the deal! The fish was in the same exact spot and I had the right tools for the job this time.

It wasn't 24" however it was only 20" and 4.5 lbs. My biggest so far. A nice heap.

Also caught a few cookie cutters but everything had a belly on it.

I had a similar thing happen today with a bad cept this bass had a mouth like urs but no belly...in the water it looked huge. It hit my fake frog 3 seporate times with no hook set I could see it in the water the pond is incredibly clear and shallow. I said screw it after a while cause I really wanted a frog bass so I put on a pop-r and sealed the deal when I spotted the fish in about a foot of water...the while test of the day I caught fish on top waters. One on a spinnerbait. Then in the after non I fished quick at a local reservoir and got a 1.5 pounder jigging a shin chilled creme worm on a black jig head. I figured id say how the rest of my day went too.
