I decided to head down to Old Lyme and check out Hamburg Cove, again, today. For real, this time. Laughing

I launched in El Habañero at the ramp next to the Hamburg Cove Yacht Club and got on the water at 9:15 am:

The air temperature was in the low 50s, but I enjoyed full sun. Unfortunately, however, I also enjoyed a brisk wind. Rolling Eyes

The water temperature ranged from 48 to 50 degrees until after noon, when it warmed up to as high as 52 degrees. The water was fairly murky, with visibility down only two to three feet. The water level was already pretty high when I launched, although the high tide was around noon. I pedaled around the inner cove for a while, but didn't see any fish either in the murky water or on my fish finder. I threw a white four inch curlytail grub on a 1/8 ounce shakeyhead jighead and a Silver Pearl 2-1/2 inch Gulp! Minnow on a 1/16 ounce round jighead. Before I headed to the channel that leads to the outer cove, I threw the grub jig at the steel seawall. On one retrieve, I pulled the grub jig out of the water just in time to see the back of a chain pickerel that was following it glide underneath me. Only a couple of casts later, though, I boated my first fish, which was a 22 inch chain pickerel:

I threw both the grub jig and the minnow jig as I pedaled through the channel, but didn't get any hits. Not long after I got into the outer cove, however, I boated a nine inch white perch with the minnow jig:

And within the next 10 minutes, the minnow jig also got me two more fish. First, I got a fatty yellow perch:

Next, I got another pickerel, but this time it was a 24 incher:

I boated several more yellow perch and pickerel, before I caught the lunker pickerel, which was 26 inches long:

After I de-slimed myself from the pickerel, I boated a largemouth bass:

Yeah, it was only a short, but it was a largemouth bass! Whoo hoo! Very Happy

Less than 15 minutes later, I caught a sunny, too:

The wind couldn't make up its mind from which direction to blow until about 2:00 pm, when it decided to blow from the north:

And here's a pickerel that had someone else's curlytail grub jig still in its mouth:

I got off of the water at 3:30 pm. All in all, I caught more than a dozen pickerel, more than a dozen yellow perch, two sunnies, one white perch and one largemouth bass. I caught three of the pickerel with the grub jig and the rest with the minnow jig. Like I said, Mark, the minnow jig will catch anything. Wink

Hi,

Another good day at Hamburg for you Phil ! Thumbs Up

Plan to get out tomorrow -> Got a lot of the yard finally cleaned up.
Next will be to get the veggie garden tilled.

We had a large brush fire at the west end of Winsted today just off Rt. 183 north.
Wind is not helping -> all the fallen trees and limbs + under brush are dry as a bone -> Fire warnings are at HIGH for all of the state!

gotta get me down there, somehow on some type of water vehicle.... great pickerel, I know some people don't like catching them but I think they put up a good fight.... nice with the gulp minnows... I can't wait to use them in more places than the hockanum right now.

Great to see SOMEONE catch something in Old Lyme yesterday Phil, we got SKUNKED at the beach and the docks. Not a great fishing day, but other than the consistent wind, it was a very nice weather day.

When I drove over the Baldwin Bridge at 3:45 pm, I saw a boat drifting the Connecticut River just upriver from the bridge. I wondered whether that was you, Ian, but I guess you were stuck on the shore.

Let me know when you're free to paddle around, especially during the week. It would be easy for me to throw an extra kayak on the roof of my Jeep and pick you up in South Glastonbury when I head down to Old Lyme. I'd also love to check out Chapman Pond or the old powerplant canal sometime soon.

Nice job Phil!

Any weight to the 26" pickerel? How close to a pound were those chubby yellows?

I have to admit....I truly do admire your passion for fishing - no matter what you catch or the size of the fish, you're proud of every single fish you catch and I tip my hat to you bro!

Sometimes I go fishing (I don't have the fortunate element of a boat) and don't catch anything, but it makes the days I do a whole lot brighter Smile
