oh boy.. the adventure was today.... nice area, cloudy windy chilly day... The adventure was "how many times can Mark get snagged?" Lots of trees on the bank in this area and lots of trees/brush underwater along the banks. Amazingly though, for the amount of times I got caught up I didn't lose a single lure! Even with the 6lb test I use, thinking, "oh boy...again....looks like this time it's gonna break" and it gets undone...my hooks bent. I use a simple rapala knot for everything.. Now, you're wondering about how many fish I caught? None...not even a hit, nibble, strike...nuthin'... I was there for about 2 hours... I was using mainly inline spinners, white with silver blade and black with perch colored blade. I also threw a 3/8 ounce ratller and a black and yellow curly tail road runner spinner. Maybe if it was 70 and sunny it would have been better.. it was 48 and windy and chilly.

That section of the Farmington River is closed to fishing until Opening Day, Mark! Unless otherwise indicated in the Rivers & Streams listings of the 2012 Connecticut Angler's Guide, rivers & streams are open from 6:00 a.m. on the 3rd Saturday in April through the last day of February (closed to all fishing from March 1st to 6:00 a.m. on the 3rd Saturday in April). Unfortunately, the listing for the LOWER FARMINGTON RIVER (Farmington to Windsor, from Route 177 bridge in Unionville Center downstream to Rainbow Reservoir Dam) doesn't otherwise indicate that it's open to fishing. Oops! Rolling Eyes

I'm not judging you. Smile Been there, done that, too. Laughing

From Rt 177 bridge in unionville (End of TMA) down to rainbow damn is closed. Rainbow damn to CT river is open. If I remember correctly.

Yes, PTO, that's correct; those are tidal waters. I hope to get down there, soon.

according to the anglers guide, the downstream portion of the farmington and the west branch part of the farmington is open year round... what is considered "downstream"? It's confusing....seriously..

Hi chud,

Oh Yeah! It can be very confusing ...plus new 2012 rules and regs. are now in place!

When in doubt, I call the particular DEEP office that has juristiction over a particular body of water, and ask to speak with someone with up to date knowledge and authority.

Oh! and when you call -> (Important): Jot down the day, time, and person's name/ tel.number .... who gives you the info your asking about. -> That's your proof if your fishing action is ever called into question!

Strangely, the version of the 2012 Connecticut Angler's Guide that's published online for mobile devices is more current than the one that's published online for computers. I noticed this because I use both of them. The version for mobile devices features an article about the six new state fishing records that were set in 2011. I think it's the version that'll be printed. . . someday soon, hopefully. Rolling Eyes Incidentally, I noticed that it includes a coupon for $10 off of a $50 purchase from Dick's Sporting Goods. Very Happy

Anyway, the 2012 Angler's Guide describes the LOWER FARMINGTON RIVER, which has a Closed Season, as "Farmington to Windsor; From Route 177 bridge in Unionville Center downstream to Rainbow Reservoir Dam." Although the compass direction of the river's flow is mostly north from Farmington to Windsor, the water flows from a higher elevation in Farmington to a lower elevation in Windsor, so Windsor is "downstream" from Farmington.

The 2012 Angler's Guide also describes the LOWER RIVER/TIDAL WATERS, which does NOT have a Closed Season, as "Windsor; From mouth of tailrace canal below Rainbow Dam to confluence with Connecticut River." I usually access this part of the Farmington River from the Connecticut River. It's a really nice paddle. Very Happy

Someone at the DEEP must have read my post. Laughing The newest version of the guide now shows up for computers, too:

http://www.ct.gov/dep/lib/dep/fishing/anglers_guide/anguide.pdf

When you open this link with a mobile device, the server will automatically direct you to a document that's formatted for mobile devices.

The last item on the CT Fishing tab, above, will also get you to the newest version of the Connecticut Angler's Guide.
