depends on what you're targeting. we use em up in new york for steelhead, salmon, etc. don't have much experience using them down here. but try em out. i've done ridiculously well on the most random stupid lookin fly patterns. one can never be too sure whats gonna be workin on any given day

Hi,

Try everything and anything!
Sometimes the worst tied fly will produce better than a perfectly tied one !

Bottom line -> It's the fish's call ! Rolling Eyes

trout will hit them and I've used them. Mostly in the fall or winter as an attractor. With all the bugs out and about now even the stokers learn to key in on them and will refuse other offerings, however an egg as an attractor can be a trigger. when I've fished them it was always in a two fly rig.

Yesterday I rigged it up with a prince nymph #14. Hopefully the bright orange egg at least attracts fish so that they see the nymph. We'll see soon enough.

prince nymph is also considered an attractor nymph but catches fish for sure. keep us posted on how it goes.

tried out the egg patterns today at saugatuck's tma...nothing. The water was very low and the fish were very visible so I think they saw me and were spooked. However after watching fish surface left and right I threw a grasshopper and got one strike but did not hook up. I usually get several strikes there, I think the fish are getting smarter.

Hi,

Egg patterns should have worked -> But with the water gin clear and low I do belive your correct that they're spooking easily!

I'm thinking 9 ft. leader and 6x to 8x tippet with dry or nymph ....maybe even a brace of wets !
Either that or go big with Streamers and Woolybugers.

Again ...We need some serious rain!

I would suggest just fishing a black or purple beadhead woolybugger with crystal flash tied in and drift it thru deeper water the same way you would a nymph, or google french nymphing and try that out.

The whole concept of Euro Nymphing or long line nymphing was created out of those spooky fish fisheries overseas. The long leaders and long rods allow you to fish farther from you giving those spooky fish room and still allowing you to get good casts and drifts and catch those spooky fish. Sometimes if you can fish way above them and down to them like swinging some wets or streamers down to them. Even stockers get spooky.
