Hi,

What ever you use -> Don't use that black catfish chicken liver bait paste from Kmart!

That stuff wiill gag a maggot ! Awful smell, very sticky, -> Took me 3 days to get the smell off my hands.

JohnnyBoy...

You can't go wrong with chicken livers, other than they're a pain to keep on the hook, Cut bait like mackerel or herring work good too
. Isn't the CT river kinda high now?

Hi,

Forgot -> Hotdogs infused with garlic worked pretty good for me, and a lot easier to use.

went for a couple of hours and my brother caught a 3 pound channel cat. We were using 2 poles that had pike shiners and the other 2 had dead sunfish. It was caught on the pike shiner. We have used chicken liver before, it was just to much trouble. We forgot our camera at home so we didnt get any pictures Sad

chiken liver is my go to bait. what i do is i get a tub of livers and a pack of the hearts and gizards. i mix them together so the livers and hearts can absorb the blood from the livers. they go after the hearts and gizzards more just cause you will never lose them and always have bait on your hook. you can fish one heart all day and wont lose it. its even hard to pull it off by hand. i like to mix em together in a large ziplock bag, sprinkle some garlic powder in the bag and leave em outside untill the bag is bloated and the livers n gizards are spoiled. it smells awfull but thats why its successful. i also sometimes will toss the livers out in a chum bag because they are worthless on a hook.

Chicken livers were my go to bait when I lived in Oklahoma. Used to catch some big bullheads. Haven't gone cat-fishing here in CT. Any good local lakes or ponds for catfish? I'd love to take my daughters (2 7 year olds) fishing for catfish. I don't think they have ever seen a live one before.

Rotten raw shrimp has always been a good one for me.

Dead shiners with salt or garlic also do well.

i keep my bluefish bellies from the fall frozen. granted its a deep freeze in the single digits so it stays a little better, but thaw a bag out, add some garlic powder and leave it out for a day or two before your catfish trip and youre good to go. in a standard freezer, if you're keepin em in there for a long time, cover in salt and freeze. i mean it smells like a fart passed through an old onion when you're tryin to get it on the hook, but hey. whatever catches fish. we've gotten em into the double digits and 30+ inch range in some of my better spots, but we'll save that discussion for another day Wink
