Hi,

Of all the ice fishing safety equipment -> the one that gets the least amount of attention is the Whistle.

A whistle is required on all PFD's.

WHY? -> Because the sound of a whistle will carry much much further then the human voice.
Also it's much easier to blow a whistle then to scream and yell.

So, besides your picks and rope -> get a whistle -> it could very well help save your life!

well it woould get a persons attention but, many may ignore it

a whistle doesn't mean come help either

so unless a person living around the water or a person already fishing is really paying attention AND knows that a whistle blown on the ice means HEEEELP

it may not be so helpful

on the other hand the more attention you can get the better

Hi,

A whistle (by USCG definition) is a sound appliance to get attention.

That is what it is there for and required on PFD's.
Strictly an attention getter -> and "It Works".

The sound of a whistle will carry farther then the human voice and will get your attention very fast.

When there use to be traffic cops, they used a whistle to get your attention over the dim of traffic.

Good example is in the movie "Titanic" where the girl uses a whistle to get the attention of the rescue boart.

I guarantee you 100% -> That if I blow my whistle while on the ice -> Your head is going to snap straight up looking to find where it came from Exclamation

3-blasts from the whistle is an Internationally Recognized Distress Signal

Didn't know that but now I do. For the cost of a whistle and the possibility it could save your life it makes sense to get one. I always carry one with me on the ice and in my yak.

Hey, Stephen, if we were to fall through the ice together, I guarantee that I'd scream and yell much more easily and quickly than you'd blow your whistle! Laughing

Seriously, though, I'm considering wearing some kind of a self-inflating PFD while ice fishing, now.
