I know this warm weather is KILLING the ice! I don't even know if this weekend will be safe enough to go out, r u thinking there might be some lakes that still have a good amount of ice to go on? |

Hi 111,
I don't know!
No one and I mean "NO ONE" can give you an answer that far in advance.
Only GOD and Mother Nature control the Wx
Keep in mind that ice (fact) not only melts from the top down but from the bottom up.
Watch the Wx reports and hope for the best!
If we don't get a good cold snap this month, for a few days -> I'm done

Hi phs,
Yeah! The few hours of nightime low temps will only maintain what ice there already is "not make new ice" because the day time temps will still have more effect because the days are getting longer.
Mightime will hold what there is already and the Daytime takes it away!
Hope for a good day/night cold snap that will stay for 3-4 days.

Hi,
OK! It is now 10:30 PM here in Winsted (2/1/2012) and I just checked the NOAA weather site.
Temp is 43 F
Probably won't get to 32 F till after midnight.
Not good as 4-5 hours at 32 F or below will only maintain what ice there is and not make ice.
Then when the sun rises, temps will go up and we're back into a melt sittuation.
Are we going to get a cold snap?
All depends if the jet stream dips down far enough into the eastern US this month.
Sorry to sound so pesimistic but it is what it is -> definitely going to be a short ice season this year!
Lets hope that fat rodent in Pa. sees his shadow tomorrow morning and predicts 6 more weeks of winter (with cold temps)

Ok, enough with the wishing for cold!!! I love to go ice fishing as much as anyone, been doing it for 40+ years now. But I'd rather be hanging in the bass boat no matter what. So let's just let the weather do what it may and move on now. Might have plans with Phil to hit some ice this weekend, but it'll have to be well north of Wolcott for sure. I would like to get out on the ice a couple times at least. |
