Noob!
Despite the warm weather forecasts for the Farmington River Valley, it was cold enough today for the old holes that I hacked back open to quickly freeze over at Countryside Park in Avon. And there was still 5-1/2 to 6-1/2 inches of clear ice everywhere that I checked.
You should head north or northwest to find better ice than I've heard is down there in Meriden/Middlefield. Look for five or more inches of clear ice, please! It would be nice if you could change your screen name to icefishingoldtimer in 40 years.
I'm heading to the northwest myself, tomorrow. I'll post a report when I get back.

Hi newbie,
1st of all you have to understand that there is no such thing as safe ice "EVER"! -> Ice does not form evenly "ANYWHERE"!
2nd Safety (gear + buddy) is No. 1 "ALWAYS"!
3rd you have to check the weather religiously before you venture out and starting tomorrow late we're going to get rain + warmer temps over the next few days.
So -> what ever decent ice there is now (4" and up) can/will likely be seriously compromised for the weekend.
To date this has been a very poor ice fishing season here in Ct. and most likely be a very short season.
It all depends on GOD and Mother Nature and they alone control the Wx
There's no one here that can give you any kind of definitive answer to your question, because even we don't know where or if there will be any decent ice anywhere once the up-coming Wx starts to affect the ice.
Best regards,
