Can anyone recommend an appropriate GPS that could be used both for kayaking/fishing (marking fishing spots/structure) as well as for hiking (to save routes/camping spots/etc)? I’ve never used a GPS other than a typical turn-by-turn direction type for driving. I did some hiking this weekend in an area which is kind of “out there”, and at times on the way home (as the sun was setting) I wasn’t sure we were on the same trail, as these were all un-blazed dirtbike trails. Would like to avoid this bad feeling in the future!

Hey i advise you to go with the GPS' that have the emergancy buttons from dicks or cabelas becuase worst case you get in a jam and dont have a button to push for emergancy help

If you're hiking within cellphone range and have a smartphone, a map app would work. I really like the MapQuest and Navionics apps on my iPhone.

I do not have a smart phone yet, but I was considering upgrading soon. I think my girlfriend and I may combine our separate cell phone plans. Do these map apps have features like I described above of being able to save routes and/or specific locations? It’s pretty unusual to be out of cell phone range in New England these days, after all.

You could drop a "pin" on a map at your starting location before you set off on a hike. I think that even the default Google Maps app on the iPhone is accurate enough for this to work well.

Hey RD,
I have a Garmin handheld eTrex Vista HCx . I've used it for hunting and quad riding up north. Great little devise, it shows topo mapping and streets,I'm sure it does more than i'll ever know but it was easy for me to get started with. you probably will want to bring the manual the first few times you go out.
I even took it on the boat with me and checked it against my Humminbird and the tracks were right on.
