Hit up Lake Wintergreen in Hamden again after work today. Normally I at least catch at least a couple short LMBs but today I got nothing. Tried both wacky and texas rigged senkos. Got a couple stories though.

There was a middle aged guy trying to teach her daughter(~7 I'm assuming?) how to use a spinning reel. That was interesting to see. He ended up coming over and asking what I was throwing. He had never seen a senko before so I showed him different ways to rig them. Said he'll pick some up and try them. Good luck if you're a lurker!

There was also another guy who was just pulling in his new inflatable raft when I got there. Said he was out there for a little bit and got nothing as well. Ended up bringing up CTFishTalk and he admitted he was a lurker. He asked me if I knew PECo. You're famous PECo! He says hi. Told him he should quit being a lurker and join. We'll see what happens.

Then as I left there was a guy drop-shotting. He showed me his rig and gave me a few yards of trilene to use as a leader off my braid and showed me how to tie it on. Thanks for the tips man.

All in all it still wasn't a bad trip out. Was there for probably an hour and a half or so. Met a few interesting people, learned a couple things. Can't complain. Here's to next time.

Yeah, if the largemouth bass aren't biting close to the shore in the shallows, tie on a few feet of fluoro leader to your braid and use a drop shot to fish further from the shore and deeper.

Right now, I can't recommend a big spinnerbait enough. Fish it slowly with a steady retrieve near the bottom.

Yeah, I thought I had one...turns out I don't. I'll run to Dick's at some point this week and pick one up.

Drop shotting was interesting to see. I had read about it but have never seen it in action before. With the fluorocarbon leader tied on it killed my casting distance. Need more weight I guess.

Jason, That guy with the daughter sounds like me, I guess i'm middle-aged and have a seven year old. What qualifies as middle-aged to you? LOL

Jason, with a drop shot, you tie your hook about a foot up the line and tie an egg sinker to the end of the line. Even a 1/4 ounce egg sinker should increase your casting distance.

Fishface - Yeah he was probably middle 30's?

PECo - Yeah I looked at his rig. I was referring to using a leader impacting my casting distance, not necesarrily drop shotting.

Always put your hook where ever or what depth you see them suspended,,, I have tied a drop shot up 4 ft from the bottom,,, and guys you should get away from that braid,,

We can't carry 20 setups on our kayaks like you can on your bass boat, Jim. When I have only two setups with me, at least one of them is spooled with braid. Whenever I've wanted to fish a drop shot, I've just tied a few feet of fluoro leader onto the braid. Lately, though, I've been carrying a spare spool with 12 pound test Berkley NanoFil line on it, for when I want to be able to cover more water, because it casts like mono or fluoro.

you really should be just about vertically jigging the dropshot to really get the most out of it anyways so if your standing up in a boat the casting distance doesnt really matter Very Happy

yeah ideally you want your bait right where there suspended or just above them, and a heavier sinker than you think actually works better, use a 1/4 ounce more than u think will be enough, you really dont want the sinker ever to leave the bottom, just SLOWLY dragged across the bottom with the little wind and waves there is to be enough to give your lure the fluttering lifelike action. and use flourocarbon line 4-10 pound and no leader... hope that helps! also make sure your knot is tied correctly and the hook and bait both sit horizontal in the water Wink

jbrown, that was me who showed you the dropshot. Have you attempted it since?

Don't know why there is any hate for braid on here. $30 for a spool of braid and a $15 for a spool of 100% fluoro and you don't have to buy line for your spinning setup all year. As long as you keep your leader long enough the fish won't know any better.

Wintergreen is a worthless place to fish. The one area that provides plenty of cover, the immediate area after you take the turn and come into the main lake, is unreachable via the shore. There is one spot directly out toward the middle of the lake, from the corner of the riprap where they put down cement, that has a large portion of deep isolated structure. Beyond that, it's a place for people to go and make bluegill sandwiches - too many folks with 5 gallon buckets and unregulated fish creel.

Also they make specific weights for drop shotting...A lot easier than using a egg sinker. Tying a drop shot set up is annoying enough with out any other hassels. In my opinion you have to tailor the weight to the rod you are using. If you are using a general rod that you use for everything then yes you can use a larger weight 1/4oz and higher. Most of your drop shot specific rods dont like more than a quarter ounce. Make sure your hook point is ALWAYS up. And trust me on one thing if you listen to nothing else....dont let people tell you that drop shotting is just for deep water. Wink
