Yes, but only the back cove past the highway is safe ice.

Hi!

Any ice that is subjected to water flow under it, also rise and fall of the tide, is ice you should be VERY WARY of Exclamation

Note: There is tidal effect on the Connecticut River all the way up to Windsor Locks.

Past 2 years fishermen up on the Great Lakes got caught drifting out into the main lake on an ice flow that broke off from the land.
Had to be rescued by boat and helicopter -> Many lost all their gear as well as ATV's and Snowmobiles.

Fact is, You should never trust any ice anywhere because it doesn't freeze uniformly and weak spots can occur from underwater springs, running water, and other sources.
Also the rule of thumb on ice safety is "NEVER" go out on ice less then 4 inches thick.
Also "NEVER!...EVER!" go alone and have all your safety gear with you!

I agree with Seadog...There's too much water flowing in and out of that cove for me to want to go out there.

I heard a story that someone that lived near the cove ice skated on it and fell through then died. It is sad.

tons of people fish weathersfield cove through the ice. If we have a winter like the last two, by mid january the ice is pretty much over 8 inches every north of middletown. Just stay away from flowing water, the ice rises and falls with the tide. at high tide sometimes you have to walk though a foot of water to get to the ice.
Another general rule of thumb is in the early season the ice by the land is safer, and late season the middle of the lake or ponder is safer.
