|
|
I have seen a lot of fish this year with black blotches on their skin. On the mouth anal fin tail and other areas as well. I did a little googling and have read a bunch of opinions but nothing concrete. Some people say its bruising some say it's genetic some think it only happens on mishandled c n r fish. Anyone here have an opinion on the matter?
I'm talking about this stuff ...
You can see on the tail and anal fin
And this in extreme cases ...

Pigmintation blah, blah, blah. Seems as this is becoming more common starting around 5 years ago. Doesn't seem to be harming the fish though. Camo-bass. |

I've read that "bass blotch" is a pigmentation issue (i.e.., hyperpigmented melanosis), too, and that scientists still don't know what causes it. However, I've also read that it can go away over time. In any case, I haven't read that anyone believes it's harmful to either fish or people who eat them. Here's a decent article that discusses it:
http://www.wmi.org/bassfish/articles/T205.htm
I've caught quite a few largemouth bass with bass blotch, especially in Spring Pond. It makes it very easy to tell when you've recaught a fish. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

Yup...everything I have seen says it's a pigmentation issue. Not a disease or anything like that. I have caught quite a few of them at several different places. This is the worst one I have caught. It's from Keeney Cove.

3 of the 12 bass I caught at Wethersfield Cove this week had black splotches. One of them had a piece of its tail missing and 2 arrangements of splotches that resembled bite marks from a large toothy fish. Every time I catch these fish they're in pike waters. I'm convinced that the splotches are the result of past cellular damage.

I see what you mean Kira. That second to last pic you see like what could've been a pike attack on its face. _________________ Never give up! |

That same pike-mouth shaped imprint was around the tail of the same fish, and a piece of the tail was missing. It's pretty obvious that the black areas indicate some past trauma to the area. The round, circular blotches are probably from leeches, lampreys, or some other parasite. You won't see drastic blotching on younger bass because they're far less likely to survive an altercation with a much larger fish.
Lots of blotchy, f'd-up bass at at Beseck. _________________ Kira
