Looked at the weather and decided to go today instead of Thursday. Went and got skunked. One good run on the Baitrunner but grabbed and yanked and nothing there. Crying or Very sad Oh well, I guess thats why they call it fishing and not catching!

has anyone been to the cape cod canal in recent weeks? I'll be in the area next weekend (29/30), wondering if it's worth giving it a shot. Also Buzzards/Onset bay?

Hi!

Went to school at MMA on the canal.
Suggest you give "RedTop Bait" downtown Buzzards Bay on what's running in the canal and smaller bays.

What the heck was up with the Sound today? I drove over to West Haven to do some fishing only to find the water looking like we were in the middle of a hurricane! The freaking wind was whipping like crazy and the waves were crashing way over the pier. I went back to Shelton in the Housy and got a few big bites but missed them but did catch a decent Catfish on mackerel. I threw on some Bunker and the bite died off. Threw mack back o and it picked up again so Im guessing t was mainly catfish and that hey dont like the bunker.

TravelingSeas, you were right on the money!!! This morning I went back to the Housy to play before work and was getting a ton of bites again so I said screw and and waited for the nibble and yanked it hard and snagged a 18" eel right in the side. Also, as I was getting bites and when I git a good one my line would end up snagged so Im guessing the eels were grabbing and then draggin it under the rocks. Those things are PITA's but put up a nice fight when caught. Taking them off the hok isnt much fun though and then wiping down the line and hook from all that dang slime!!! Yuck! Going back to West haven again tomorrow around 4 to try and catch some Blues before they migrate and then some striper fishing in the morn. Not sure where Im going for that but probably Comp beach.

My boat is right there at that marina. Facing the park to at the last finger. In that river it's almost always eels. You wouldn't think something so long and skinny could put up such a good fight but they do. When nothing else is biting I'll use a light rod and small hooks and go for those. As far as getting them off the hook, I just grab the shank with my leatherman and hold the eel that way rotating the hook back out of the mouth.

Heading out from there tomorrow sometime to Penfield Reef if the water is ok. If not I'll hide out in the mouth of the river. Browns Bait will meet me at the end of his marina with bait so I don't even have to get out of my boat.

I've seen a lot of schoolies being caught at a spot I know. I am going to use a 4 inch gulp minnow on a jig head, and try for those. I still haven't seen or heard of a single bunker in my area this entire fall!!!!!!!! Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Oh yeah, who ever is catching eels, should use them for live striper bait! They produce large stripers.

Is a 18" eel still bait??? This thing was huge and I know they still get bigger but at that size will a striper still eat it? I try my hardest not to catch schoolies. When I start getting a few of those I up the size of my bait which helps to either produce bigger fish or the fishing dies off. Go big or go home!! LOL

Yeah I've never caught an eel in there that could be turned around and used as bait unless I was fishing for the loch ness monster. I've caught them longer than my arm.

Yeah, 18 inch eels are probably too big, but if you catch one around 12 inches it will be perfect.

I killed the Blues in west haven last night. 4 in the 10-13lb range, 2 in the 8 lb range and then a freakishly huge Sea Robin. I then left and went to Milford and got 1 keeper Striper and one just under between 12- and 2 am before I started getting really sleepy. Woke up yesterday at 4:45 with serious leg cramps otherwise I would have fished much longer. Started the day fishing at about 4:30.
