Hi pP1,

The 3 bait shops here in the NW corner aren't going to carry any till ice fishing season, if they can get them.

Best they can get right now is mediun heavy shinners.

They're not even sure if they may carry them because of the cost.
Pike bait is going to be very expensive this year. (Well over $1.00 per fish)

If you have knowledge of where to catch goldies or suckers -> ("You may want to keep that info to yourself")...... (also catch some now and freeze them).

I keep getting calls from guys that know my next door neighbor has a small spring feed old mill fire pond chocka-blocked full of goldies....all sizes (I give him fresh caught fish and he lets me take all the goldies I want).
Can't sell them as that would be unethical to catch and sell goldies from his pond ----> I'm not even about to screw that agreement up!

Other than that -> see where you can find a store that sells canned Mackerel, or canned Sardines only in oil to use as cut bait.

Good luck in your search!

Don't bother going to CT Outfitters in Wethersfield (they usually have them). I was there this weekend and they are trying to sell large shiners (4"-5" at best) as pike bait for over $1 each! Pike bait are (or should be) juvenile golden shiners. They should be gold in color with a lateral line that dips downward and be around 6"-7" long. The guy filled my bucket and I made him take them back. I told him they weren't pike bait and I wasn't paying that price for them. This is the 2nd time they have done this to me and the first time I was on the water before I realized. I will not be going to CT Outfitters again, that's for sure!
Mikes Bait and Tackle in Preston is the only other place that I know of who always has them and they are BIG, too. Other than that you have to find a place to catch your own bait. That's what I do.

Hi Dave!

I agree with you that everyone has their own opinions on different subjects.

But, you still don't get it!

This forum is here to be as helpful as possible, informative, and constructive to your fellow fishermen/women.

Your rehtoric with foul language wasn't helpful at all. In fact I found it personally disgusting Exclamation
There's really no need to use the F word towards anyone anytime to get ones point across.

Yeah! I do get into some pretty good disagreements with others here on the forum, but as everyone knows, I have never ever used any foul language towards anyone publicly. -> (Privately, I can swear a blue streak like any good Sailor ! Razz )

I'm glad I took a course in creative writing in college! -> Somehow I'll just have to live with that ability ! Very Happy

As far as bait is concerned -> "Again", If you know a place where you can catch your own -> then YES! I would have to agree that you keep it quiet or your spot will be cleaned out faster then you know what comes out the back end of a goose Exclamation

Best regards,

just wanted to know a few things, will the pond shiners go in a minnow trap with cat food? also, if your using a sabiki rig should i just use it on one of my icefishing rods with light line off the side of the boat? and if so, what do you tip them with? mousies? for suckers and golden pond shiners 6-10 inches in size. thanks in advance for any helpful info!

Hi pP1!

YES! They will go into a trap baited with cat food.
I do it in my neighbors pond when I want to get some quick.
Doesn't take long once the bait scent disperses -> have caught 4-8 dozen in under 2 hours. -> Check your trap every 1/2 hour or so.
Just make sure the trap complies with DEP regs.

Any light rod will do -> Also I like to catch them individually on a #16 or #18 fly hook (+ small split shot) under a small weighted bobber.
Shinners and Suckers are very very carnivorous so bait hooks with the very tiniest of worm pices.

Use smallest size Sabiki you can find for Shinners.
Use larger size hooks for Suckers.

Shinners and Suckers are not line shy so any light line from 4 to 10 lb. test will do just fine.

If fishing from a boat -> hang a mesh bag of cat food just under the boat.
Same if fishing thru the ice.
Don't forget bucket and aerator + some ice to keep water cool.

Have FUN Exclamation Very Happy

I would love to be able to use traps, but I'm looking for fish too big to fit in the holes. If you use a sabiki rig, remember that only 3 of the hooks can be baited.
