after a rather "interesting" night last night i awoke around 1 PM to find no car in my driveway. a quick call to my friend and i realized that it was still in the parking lot at the bar... whoops. once someone came to pick me up and bring me to my car, i decided to try the Dam from shore this afternoon, as i haven't been there in quite some time.
it was cloudy and calm today, would have been a perfect day to put my boat out there (it seems like its ALWAYS choppy at this lake). unfortunately my subaru is still broken, and i can't transport my john boat on my escort . so... i fished from the rocks on the western shore, right near the spillway. i was getting hits from small smallies intermittently throughout the afternoon. i landed 1 and a half... one pictured here:
and another one about the same size which shook himself off the hook as i lifted him out of the water. i had two more on that i never saw, and one more which jumped and threw my spinnerbait.
i had the most luck with a small green skirted football head jig, with a green/white ribbontail worm as a trailer. most strikes came on the drop, seemingly just before hitting bottom. i also tried a white willow/colorado spinnerbait (nothing) and a chart double willow spinnerbait (hooked one but didnt land it).
for their size smallies sure do put up a fight! i'm going to have to pick up some tubes and head down there again soon. i was using my medium casting setup with 10lb line today, will probably try my light spinning setup next time with 6lb. _________________ PB's:

nice job! I was there today with my boat and i caught 12 smallies 1 larry around the foundation across from the end of the peninsula and got a few out of the spill way too. it was probably the most action ive ever had out of one spot .I was using a smoke/red fleck tube with 1/4oz jig head. give the tube a try if you can get out in your boat,or even off shore. _________________ this fish here is a real donkey!!! |

i wound up going there yesterday as well, in the afternoon though. i fished from the end of the peninsula, but kept seeing fish breaking out near that foundation. wound up catching two smallies on senkos... but it sounds like i definitely need to get out there in my boat! It was kind of a surprise trip so i didn't end up getting any tubes yet... next time though for sure
by the way 13 fish off of one piece of structure is pretty awesome! _________________ PB's:

I was really surprised, i always thought that would be a good spot but usually would only pick a few up there but i guess they finally decided to school up there. Good job picking a few up off the peninsula, i usually just loose lures left and right every time i fish from shore there _________________ this fish here is a real donkey!!! |

That has been my past experience also… part of why we were just using senkos haha (yum dingers, really). Did end up losing a few, but who cares… that’s one thing I love about using soft plastics rather than crankbaits and whatnot - especially from shore. At least in a boat you can pull from different angles and often get yourself un-snagged. _________________ PB's:

Yes I was fishing from shore, don’t have a way to transport my boat right now.
Went back again yesterday afternoon with some tubes and spinner baits. The water level is back down to normal, and there is minimal flow in the channel. No luck at ALL from the tip of the peninsula. Decided to try fishing off the north side of the peninsula on my way back. Got one small LMB on a white spinnerbait, then a good sized 2-pound pickerel with the same lure. Finally I got another (much smaller) pickerel on a tube, off the rocks right at the “base” of the peninsula. _________________ PB's:

Last time I fished the dam I had a lot of luck on the south side of the the old road down towards the base and then again half way up. Was using 4inch senkos and fishing the over hanging over trees but only the ones that had brush in the water were proving productive. |

thanks for the tip! We had a pretty strong breeze out of the south the other day and I was using a baitcasting reel… so it was north side of the road for me by necessity haha. i will definitely try that next time though! _________________ PB's:
