FIshed the Mianus River, close to the outlet to the sound. Arrived at about 9:30 with some small/medium shiners. Threw out some casts with the baitfish on and didn't hook anything, although I got a few bites. The two people that joined me each snagged a baby bluefish (8 inches probably) and a baby striped bass (7 inches).
I put on my Silver Minnow-rap and jokingly put one of the shiners on the distal treble hook. Casted it out there a few times and got nothing, not even a bite on the shiner.
Then BAM! Something huge hits my line and pulls my line out like it's nothing. Apparently my drag was set way loose (new reel...I'm an idiot) so as I'm trying to hold the rod and pull the fish away from the bridge pillars I'm simultaneously set the drag higher. Once the reel started resisting the fish's movement I slowly started reeling him in. All in all the fight lasted probably 2 or 3 minutes.
Got a Bluefish close to 18"! By far the biggest fish I've caught so far. Even got a few pics of him.
Next cast with just the minnow-rap got a bite from what looked like a decent sized striper. He jumped and unhooked himself though. Shame.[/img] |
