Has anyone been getting into fish lately? On monday, my dad and I fished a spot in fairfield at around 6 am. I caught one 18-20 inch blue and a sea robin. Today, I fished the late incoming and caught nothing. I saw only an eel and a 16 inch blue caught.Water was real murky. So, anyone doing better than me?

Do you keep blues that size? I've been told that they're better small.

Phil,

Snapper blues are much better (small). The bigger ones are very oily but I have heard there is a way to make them taste good.

Like many strong tasting fish you can soak them in milk overnight and that will pull lots of unwanted flavor out. I havent gone since Saturday Morn but caught 3 in the 30" range then. Hopefully Ill do better this Saturday and Sunday as Im entered in the big Bluefish Tournament!!!
Frankeality, that sounds about right for that size and they are pretty fun at that size and bigger.

Hi ff,

I was going to post much the same!

Marinating meat, poultry, especially game and dark flesh fish in "whole milk" will tenderize the meat due to the lactic acid in it and will draw out heavy gammy taste!
Also will add butter fat to dry lean meat like venison and wild turkey and make it moist and tender.

Using milk is a very old hunting guide trick! Very Happy

Didnt know about using it for meat! Milk also breaks down peanut butter stuck to the roof of your mouth! LOL

Laughing I always have to laugh when people try different ways to get the "fishy" taste out of fish. I eat fish for the fishy taste.

LOL. I like some fish but not stuff like sardines or really strong tastes like that but I also hate waste free food. Free, yeah right!! So far I could have saved much money on bait and everything and just went to the fish market but you get the point!

I missed a little bluefish hit today. One person had a bluefish on but it got off the hook. I saw a picture of someone with a 32 inch bluefish at the spot I was fishing. Heard they caught it a couple days ago. I've heard of a lot of people getting into big blues, but haven't heard of any bass lately. Has anyone been catching any stripers?

Everyone I talk to hasnt seen a decent bass in many weeks! I havnet even heard of anyone catching a nice blue. 34" is alright for a blue but nothing great at all. Have you heard anyone getting anything much bigger then that? Many years ago these were bait for the blues that were getting entered into the bluefish contest, now it may take 1st prize! Rolling Eyes The bass will be back and actually right now its early for blues also and everything is running late as the water temps are still like 4* warmer the typical from what Ive read.

This is a little off topic, but is has to do with the tournament. Last year, a day before the tournament, I was talking with this guy I knew when we were fishing. He said a night or two ago , he and his friend went out on a boat, and they were using live snappers for bait. He said his friend (who was in the tourny) caught a 23 pound bluefish that night. Two days before the tournament, someone in it catches a 23 pounder. That would have been a winner. I couldn't imagine how devastated his friend must have been, just days before the tournament catching a huge bluefish.
