Are you referring to dog fish? Smooth and spiny dogfish? |

FYI:
Sand sharks, spiny and smooth dogfish are 3 different species that inhabit our coastal waters. |

It's true. 3 completely different species.
Sand sharks can grow to 8 or 9 feet in length, but more commonly up here in the north they're 4-6 feet. Toothy critter as well.
Spiny dogfish are a little more abundant. Will eat just about anything. Good fight only on light tackle and pretty good to eat if you clean em right. (bleed em, gut em, skin em, ice em, asap)
Smooth dogfish are commonly referred to as sand sharks. You can get em everywhere. No teeth to take off your finger. Can grow to 5 feet, but more commonly in the 3 foot range around here. Also will eat about anything, and commonly caught off sandy beaches at night. In my experience, haulin em outta deep water, they can fool ya into thinkin they're a hefty fluke.

I was referring to sand tigers (sand sharks). I know there have been dogfish caught at penfield reef. I'm wondering about true sharks. |

From the DEEP website on fishing reports:
The sand tiger shark, sandbar shark, and smooth dogfish are protected and harvesting these species are prohibited in Connecticut waters. For more information concerning sharks, please go online to the following National Marine Fisheries Service website:
