A couple weeks ago I bought a sit on top fishing kayak and I have been going to Black Pond quite a bit. Today I decided to try Besseck Lake (first time there).

I arrived about 9:45 and after a short paddle, made my way towards the far end of the lake (lots of vegetation). I was running crank baits and had a few decent hits, including one that shredded my braid - I lost a red rattling shad in the fight. Other than that mostly uneventful.

Afterwards I made my way towards the dam and fished some more cranks and some power bait. Tried texas rigging under the trees, and some drop shot wacky rig, other than a couple nibbles. Didn't catch a darn thing.

The wake from the jet skiers and power boats is a bit annoying there. Even though I didn't catch anything, it was a nice place and as a bonus, doesn't have as skeezy of a feel that black pond does. Just wish I would have caught something.

Hey, I like Black Pond! Very Happy

You probably got bit off by a northern pike. Try a big buzzbait the next time. Hopefully, it won't be able to bite through your braid.

Oh don't get me wrong, I like Black Pond too. The first day I got my kayak, I went out and almost landed the biggest bass I have ever caught. I had it in the boat and was trying to unhook it and it snapped my line and flopped back in. I erroneously did not have a net with me.

People litter like crazy there, I have also seen a few unsavory types just sitting in their vehicles drinking (which is almost always a bad sign).

Last week when I was there with my son there were a couple of guys screaming (and I do mean screaming) f' bombs like crazy.

Apparently one of them splashed the other and he wanted to let everyone on the pond know.

Just disappointing.

Thanks for the tip on the buzz bait, I'll try that next time I'm out (hopefully in a day or two).

The unsavory drunks at Black Pond are actually pretty nice compared to the unsavory drunks at other rarely-patrolled, mostly non-residential places. If you find a better pond to park & drink at please let me know.
You can avoid wakes at Beseck between 6 p.m. and 11 a.m.

I don't actually run into a ton of people just hanging out in their vehicles drinking and watching people, so it always strikes me as odd. Why not get out of your vehicle rather than risk some open container issue on the off chance the pond is patrolled?

That said, most everyone I have met there has been quite friendly. I do like fishing there, just wish I wouldn't llse so many darn lures to the weeds.

It's rarely patrolled...that's part of the appeal, and the regulars know this.
Use 50-65 lb. braid in those pads.

Has anyone caught particularly good bass out of there (BLACK POND)?

The place LOOKS LIKE it should hold some good bass but I know it is heavily pressured.

My buddy goes there with his son a lot and he is convinced there are only sunfish in there Very Happy

I stopped by there the other day and saw evidence of BASS and TROUT and CATFISH... the sad thing about the evidence is that there was one of each floating at the boat launch Shocked

Sunfish is the majority of what I have seen caught there. Other than the one I almost landed (which doesn't count) I have never caught anything of note there. Sunnys bite like crazy along the shore.

Do you consider the bass in my avatar to be "good?"

Oh, she's back and you'll be happy to know she's a 90 degree August topwater bass. Black Pond can be tricky but I've seen it on fire a handful of times. It requires more patience than other places.

You might have better luck with the bathroom sink. More of a finesse technique.
