Navigation lights are governed by federal regulation. I took a look at the United States Coast Guard's Navigation Center website (http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/). The FAQs state (in pertinent part):
Quote: | 13. Where do Kayaks and Canoes fit into the Navigation Rules? Neither the International nor Inland Navigation Rules address "kayaks" or "canoes" per se, except in regards to "vessels under oars" in Rule 25 regarding lights. |
Rule 25(d) states (in pertinent part):
Quote: | A vessel under oars may exhibit the lights prescribed in this rule for sailing vessels, but if she does not, she shall have ready at hand an electric torch or lighted lantern showing a white light which shall be exhibited in sufficient time to prevent collision. |
So, every canoe or kayak must have "an electric torch or lighted lantern" on board. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

I guess that your lighted mohawk won't do, Jim. . . unless it's white, of course. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

I found this on page 83 of the 2011 Connecticut Boater's Guide:
Quote: |
The lighting arrangements shown in the figures here have been taken from the
U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Rules, International-Inland. |
Is that YOU in the front or the back, Jim? _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

Jim, go to Ocean State and pick up some glow bracelets...25/$5. One on each end of the canoe should keep you visible without blinding you or having to grab your flashlight everytime someone is in the area. _________________ Kira
