Got an email a few minutes ago from Tony Checkowski, the unofficial keeper of a list of striped bass caught along the East Coast that top 60 pounds.
His two books are remarkable bodies of record keeping.
His email floored me.
He had just gotten a call from a Connecticut angler who was fishing from the surf this morning and had beached an 81-pounder. I knew striper fishing was red hot right now up in those parts, but I didn't expect this potential news.
If that weight holds up on a certified scale, the angling community will have topped one of its sport's most coveted records.

Though details are still slowly getting pieced together, the striper world has been turned upside down over the last few hours with Internet reports of an 81.88-pound striped bass taken in Connecticut waters. Though it's not clear yet if this is a surf fish or boat fish, caught on live eel or live porgy, angler Greg Myerson may have just landed what I'd argue is the most coveted saltwater fish record.
Al McReynolds' 78.8-pound record, caught in Atlantic City, NJ, has stood since 1982. Though many anglers have come close to that mark, it has yet to be topped. Over the years, there have also been a large amount of hoax record catches, though this time, it would seem, evidence is mounting that the angler has legitmately toppled a record thousands have dreamed of crushing. Actually, I just got word that Myerson quickly weighed the fish and fled the scene at the tackle shop, so there is still a slight element of shadiness here. *Here's another quick update from a credible source. Mr. Myerson is apparently being so hounded he's had a panic attack. The fish is supposedly on ice in his truck, which is parked at the hospital where he's in the ER. Still not knowing how legit this catch is, it just goes to show you how powerful this fish is and how crazy people are about it.

Al McReynolds established the current International Game Fish Association all-tackle world record in 1982, with a 78 pounds, 8 ounce giant caught from the Vermont Avenue Jetty in Atantic City, N.J.
I'm trying to get in touch with the angler, who likely at this point is going absolutely bonkers.
His fish wouldn't bring him the kind of money a world record largemouth would bring, but he'd do pretty well with endorsements and tackle.
First, let's see if there's anything to this.

He's not because he is being hounded and doesn't want the aggrevation. All the jealous haters have been wrecking the guy for hours. For what? Catching a potential world record? I know the catch is legit. I have a friend close to Gregg. I won't comment any further. It's a damn shame that a fellow fisherman would get hounded and hassled that much to the point of making him not even want to bother going in the record books. The man played the game, fair and square, just like a majority of us do. He got lucky, and managed the potential record fish.
Jealousy should not be a problem here. Give the man congratulations instead.

I'd be having a panic attack too; I can totally relate to the ruthless assholery of the media when they will stop at nothing to get a story. I'm still in hiding from a similar (non-fishing) situation a year ago. You can tell by the variation in the reports that some of details are completely fabricated....they just want their story to spread like wildfire. It's pretty sad.
Regardless, congratulations Greg! I hope you get the world record and throw jigs in the faces of everybody who tries to profit off your accomplishment.

Greg sounds like a hell of a guy and a hell of a fisherman too. His accolades of the Striped Bass he caught, I would consider all of them fish of a lifetime (40, 50, 60, 70 lb bass) but he just loves fishing and keeps catching the big girls.
