Went camping this weekend at Chamberlain Lake in Woodstock. Supposed to be some good bass fishing here, seasonal campers were raving about it while we were setting up the camper/tents and unloading our jonboats. Our neighbor told us how his son has caught a 10 lber and several 8's there recently. He himself claimed to have caught what would have been a stringer of ~5 pounders just last weekend - but of course Chaimberlain is C&R only .
Got out there for a little while last night just before dusk. My girlfriend finally caught her first bass, and it was a solid 2.5 pounder! She was using a zoom junebug/chart tip finesse worm that she picked out herself, she was absolutely thrilled. The worm was texas rigged with a Matzuo(sp?) 1/0 worm hook. I like these Matzuo hooks, they are extremely sharp. A few minutes later she caught another, but this one was much smaller probably just over a pound.
And that's pretty much where the story ends... despite plenty of trying those were the only bass caught this weekend. This afternoon i intentionally caught one of the many tiny bluegills by the swimming area, and lip hooked it on a large circle hook with a bobber and slip sinker. Nothing... couldn't even catch a bass with live bait.
Ah well, there will be other weekends! _________________ PB's:

Well… we didn’t really fish at the best times of day, and it was sunny/hot this weekend. We got there late on Saturday which was okay, we could have stayed on the water through dusk as that’s generally a good time to fish… but after she caught her two fish she got cold so we headed in. Then Sunday I struggled to get her out there as early as possible, unfortunately that wound up being roughly 2 PM (I was ready to go at ~9 AM…). She had to leave for work at 4, so after she left I fished from the dam till about 6:30 when I had to head out. Her parents are still camping for a couple more days, so I’m heading back this evening to fish with her father from his boat. Fingers crossed that we’ll do a little better! I think I might try some topwater tonight, I have some jitterbugs, poppers, and buzzbaits that I never use… _________________ PB's:

That place can be unbelievably tough sometimes. The best times to get out are at dusk or before it gets light out in the morning. If there are post frontal conditions, you're wasting your time by being out there during the light hours. _________________ Catch and release only.

if you leave from the launch and follow that side of the lake, about 3/4 of the way down the lake there is a rock wall....ive ALWAYS hit big fish right there...and a little Chamberlain lake secret (I gaurantee the camper you met fishing there was named Joe, he fishes the same spot from shore everyday, doin the same thing) but he told me that if you go all the way back as far as you can till you find where the stream feeds into the lake, right back there is a 10lber that sits there ALL THE TIME....Ive seen it, but its smarter than your average bass, good luck next time.... |

I've had my best luck at the far end of the lake, too. Gotta throw something weedless, though. _________________ Go big or go home! |
