Suppose you are fishing a lake (*cough*quaddick*cough*) where essentially the ENTIRE lake is a giant weed bed a few feet below the surface. Where then? Shocked

If the weed beds are a few feet down, anything that you can drag over the tops of the weeds would probably work (e.g., a Rapala Shallow Shad Rap SSR5 or SSR7, a jerkbait, a spinnerbait, a Texas rigged worm or creature bait).

If the weeds are on the surface, I know only two options:

If you're stuck on the shore, swim a frog over the weeds. Unfortunately, that's about all that you can do. But when it works, it's an absolute blast! Just remember to let the fish take the frog BEFORE you reel in the slack line and then set the hook like you're KVD or Mike Ike.

However, if you have a boat, you could also flip a creature bait vertically through the weeds. To flip, Texas rig the creature bait with a big bullet weight (i.e., 1/2 ounce or more). A 4/0 offset shank worm EWG hook works well. Peg the weight so that the whole thing falls through the weeds together. An egg-shaped rubber bobber stopper works well for this, but jamming the tip of a toothpick between your line and the weight works fine, too. Drop the whole thing through the weeds to the bottom, twitch it and, if you don't get a hit, do it again.

I've had some luck with a Texas-rigged watermelon red Rage Tail Rage Craw, both flipping and just dragging it on the bottom. Strike King's product page for it says:

Thanks for the hints. I'm in a small boat and I can see the weeds are a few feet from the surface. I'm going to try the frog idea - around 7:30 p.m. I see all the bass coming up to the surface to feed on bugs Wink

How'd you do, Ace? At Nod Brook WMA, largemouth bass were inhaling a frog dragged over the weeds from 7:15 pm to 8:00 pm.

Dont fish till after 5, this has been my best week this summer,
Lower bolton is one big salad bowl,
wacky senkos have worked and casting a jig shallow to the shore.
The air was hot, but the water was cooler then last week.

Im awful at top water, so I like using shallow cranks.

It was tough fishing out there today. I resorted to a wacky Senko to keep from getting skunked this morning at Spring Pond, where I fished from 8:15 am to 10:00 am. I caught a distressed 15 inch sucker fish with my net and a 12 inch largemouth bass with the wacky Senko. I fished Batterson Park Pond from 11:30 am to 3:45 pm, and didn't get a bite until 2:30 pm. I got only two hits on my frog while I was there, but got good hooksets on both, and boated a 17 inch and a 16 inch largemouth bass.

You have to fish in early and late and fish out in the middle of the day. If you have a boat with any kind of electronics look for deep structure and any small blips on your screen, those will be bait fish. When there's bait fish, there's bass. Then you just have to try and match the bait fish, but you can pretty much try what you normally use, just in deeper water. Had good luck on deep running spinnerbaits, as well as Shad Raps etc.

fish at night, bass are deep in weed beds during the day cuz they are escaping the heat, and plus they dont have eye lids. I have found the later i fish, with buzzbaits and jitterbugs, the more pigs im reeling in

6pm-7am in the salad bowls. Use topwater over shallow submerged weeds either near deep water or near the thick, shallow stuff. Poppers and wakebaits work nicely in these areas.

invest in a finder if you dont have one. Get off the banks and look for deep water structure. a marker buoy can come in handy for marking the spot. off shore humps can be loaded in the summer time. electronics can really make a huge difference in putting fish in the boat or not. Me and a buddy fished lake george for three days and fished a spot the size of a football field for those three days. we found it using the finder, found big deep weed beds in 30'+ scattered everywhere and went to town. It was a swingfest. Many nice fish landed that trip.
fishing is always a learning experience. Try something new. if your fishing the 1' to 10' zone try the 10' to 20' zone. could be just the differance you need. good luck.
