So at a yard sale the other day I came across a weird looking rod. Unfortunately I didn’t think to write down the name so I could look it up later… the guy wanted more for it than I had on me anyway. It had a nice looking Daiwa compact baitcasting reel on it which is what drew my attention… but the rod itself was very strange. The base of the rod was extremely thick, like 5/8 or 3/4 of an inch. It was like this from the handle to about 1/3 of the way up, where it tapered fairly rapidly (maybe within 8 inches) down to approximately a normal medium action thickness. From there to the tip, it looked like a medium action rod. Overall the rod was about 6 feet long. Anyone know what the heck this thing might have been, and/or what the idea behind this strange design was?

By the way both the rod and reel looked fairly new, probably made within the last 10 years or so if i had to guess

Ok guys... even with the Power of the Internet I haven't been able to find out anything about this rod lol.

At the reel seat it says "Ultra Touch"
A few inches up it is labeled "Zebco Sportfisher Pro Guide UTC156"
The taper of the rod isn’t quite as extreme as I remembered, but it is still unusual looking.

The reel I was able to find online... actually it was apparently a top of the line reel 20+ years ago. It is a compact baitcaster, Daiwa Procaster Tournament PT10X. It has a magforce casting drag and even a switch for “flippin”, so I guess I’ll have to learn how to do that next!

I’m thinking the guy I bought it from rarely used it… there was still a UPC label on the rod, and the reel is nice and clean. Can’t beat it for $20 I suppose! I’ll be trying it out this weekend, going camping/fishing again…
