Can anybody offer some suggestions for good ponds/lakes within 45 minutes or so of the Milford area? I'm from PA but frequently travel to CT to visit family and I'm always looking for suggestions. I spend most time fishing Mondo ponds (with some success) because of its proximity to where I stay (and its great shore access, which I need). Any help you could offer would be much appreciated. BTW- this is a great forum. I wish something like this existed down here in the Philadelphia area where I live. Thanks.

Im not sure if meriden makes the cut for distance, but hanover pond has great shore access and lots of it!

The quality of bass in there is also above average. Most bass I have caught there have been over 2lbs and nice and fat.

Here are some of this years bass from hanover

I would say the Saugatuck Reservoir (you need a permit besides your license ), and I have not been there in a year but Lake Wintergreen has plenty of shor access.

Thanks a lot for the responses. I may try to check out both of them on Saturday. Hanover is a bit farther away, but sounds like it's worth the trip. Appreciate the help. And feel free to hit me up if you get to southeastern PA- I'd be happy to guide you to some good spots.

fishindoc: I lived in Milford for a long time and had a hard time finding ponds. Check out Lake Saltonstall. You need a permit and you can rent boats there. Huge bass in there. Also in Milford, go behind the Hometown Buffet off of exit 34, behind the dumpster there is a path that leads back to the old Milford Reservoir. Nice lake back there with nice sized bass and pickerel. If you like that spot let me know and I have another close one for you.

bigsteve- thanks for the info. I have actually fished the milford reservoir once before in March. Was only there for about an hour and lost one good one that got me hung up in a laydown. I figured it would be tough to access in the summer now that the brush has all grown in, but I may give it a shot tonight or tomorrow. Fished Mondo this morning from 6-11 with only a few dinks to show for it. Very disappointing, especially since I had such good luck there last year. As for Hanover pond, I think its somewhere in/near Meriden.

State record trout caught out of there this year
My buddy caught a monster 13lb largemouth from there.

Great place to fish especially when you get on the big ones...

Your buddy threw a new CT state record largemouth back in the Rez? Was that thing weighed...do you have any photos? I'm not doubting the catch, but that record has been standing since like 1792...or something like that, lol.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. Decided to have a go at Lake Wintergreen on Sunday morning. Fished from 6-12. Caught 4 dinks and one 1.5-2 lb. Spent most of my time skipping frogs along the heavy pads. Missed two blow ups, so I'll be sure try it again in a few weeks on my next visit to CT. Like the lake very much- plenty of shore access to all kinds of water. Only drawback was the number of people- must have been close to 40 people on the shoreline by 10, plus 5-10 more fishing from boats/kayaks, plus recreational floaters all over. All in all, though, I think this could be a go-to place in the future.

I would also love to hear more about this 13lb bass. Please post some photos if you can get a hold of any. I'm sure allot of people are unaware of the current state records, so its certainly possible that state record breakers have been simply thrown back in the water.

I believe the current LMB record is 12lb-13oz caught at Mashapaug lake in the 1960's. I could be a little off with the date though.

Hi,

I hope you guys don't mind me jumping in on your thread, but I have a question. Very Happy I can't find the old Milford reservoir looking at a map, it seems that Hometown buffet is off exit 39b instead of 34? Is that still the right location? I just don't want to drive to Hometown buffet and be traipsing around behind their dumpster with a fishing rod looking like an idiot if there is nothing there but garbage. LOL

Just checked google earth. Nothing behind hometown buffet. Try Key Hyundai Of Milford.

The gourmet buffet is right off exit 34. Go left onto the Post Road and the shopping complex is pretty close in the left side. You really do have to trek through a dumpster area and then down a path (the water will be to your right, but there is a lot of brush to make your way through). It may get a bit clearer if you progress way down the path, but I gave up last time after 100 yards or so (learned the hard way over the years about the poison oak/ivy and the hassle it brings). I just checked google earth and it is marked pretty clearly if you pan in on the general area. Good luck.

Sorry, it is Gourmet Buffet not Hometown Buffet.... off of exit 34. Another way in if I remember correctly is by following the fence up from the post road.... where the fence ends there is another path. I may be wrong about the location but somewhere back there there is another path that goes around the lake. There is also another way in but if anyone wants to know PM me.
