Fished the reef this morning from around 11:00 til 1:00. The tide was just right, outgoing. The wind wasn't bad and the surf was pretty calm. Bass breaking on sand eels all over the place. The only bad part of the equation was the filthy water from the storm system that went through. I threw everything from bucktails to swimmers to poppers to metal to teaser rigs and got no fish at all. There were half a dozen guys there throwing just about everything else i didn't along with the same. Only 1 fish was caught on a fly around 24".
I FORGOT MY EELS AT HOME!!!!
Woulda killed em!!!!
Or so i like to think.
Gonna fish the beach tonight with the eels. Hopefully i get at least 1fish. Then i will be .
And yes I'm bringing my camera. I caught too many nice fish this year and didn't have it with me. |

Fished the Reef last night. I love that place as I grew up there but it is an hour drive for me. After seeing nothing in SP Tidemill went right to the reef. Incoming Tide... check, Birds working halfway out to the light house.... check, perfect conditions. Eventually the schools moved in closer and me and another guy were in the middle of a bluefish/bass blits with sand eels almost jumping into my waders. At one point a bassed broke the surface and almost hit me in the face. Tried throwi9ng everything, including those new tube lures that I keep hearing about, but they both got caught on rocks and I had to cut loose. THrew tins, plastics, etc. but they wouldn't hit anything . Better luck next time. |

Throw a sand eel fly as a teaser on you rod. Your gonna pick up a bunch of small bass that way. The other go to on the reef is to float a sand worm (with a bobber). the second tactic is most certainly the most effective way to fish there.
Use a 3 way swivel setup as if you were drift fishing on a boat, simply replace the weight with a bobber. (don't forget to work the beach before going on the reef. usually pick up some decent fish that way)
When the bait is thick like that it is very frustrating. |

has anyone picked up and shad at the reef this year? This is one of the best sand eel runs I've seen in years.
usually good sand eel run = shad at penfield
Anyone run into any? |

I haven't seen shad since I move out of there 4-5 years ago. Hoping to fish the reef tomorrow morning or night. Any action there the past couple days? |

Been fishing there almost daily. Tons of small blues hitting metal, topwater as well but not as much. BIG sea robins. Going after the rain lets up. Bringing eels. Hopefully the blues will leave them be. If not i will save them for night time @ a different spot. Sand eel teasers w eels. Deadly if there's bass. |

Fished the reef from about 7:15 to 9:00pm. Only got 1 bluefish between the 3 of us. I got it on a kastmaster XL. 1 of my friends was using flies got nada. My other friend threw kastmasters and poppers with no takers. Gonna try tomorrow morning or afternoon on the outgoing tide. Will follow through w a report if there's anything worth reporting. Gonna hit ash creek right now.

Got to the reef somewhere after 5am this morning. Fish breaking on sand eels by the 1st little jetty. Casted into them with a popper for a while no luck. Fish were breaking all over. Then i noticed they all had red fins. Sea robins? No! Yes! Ended up getting 2 on a kastmaster XL.Couldn't believe how many there were. Then i walked down through the fog out the reef a little bit and saw a couple guys fishing so i stopped and looked around for bait. Then i saw sand eels flying everywhere being attacked by blues for about as far as my eyes could see in the fog. I ended up getting 3 fish in the hour i had left to spend there. 2 on a kastmaster xl and 1 on a 1/2 oz. white gibbs pencil popper which i had about 10 missed strikes on. The water looked like a battlefield with the fog and all the fish going ape.
It was a great morning. |

Fished the reef this morning from around 10:30 - 12:30.
Kept 4 of the 6 small blues i landed. Missed at least 10 fish that came off the hook. Was using a deadly dick. I seem to miss a lot of fish with that lure. They hit and are on for around 5-10 cranks of the reel then they let go. |

Fished the reef from 4:30 til about 6pm. Between my friend and myself we caught close to 20 12"-15" blues. He was using a popper. I was using a daiwa chugger minnow which i also caught a good 20" fluke on. I believe it was the only fluke i ever caught. Never fished for them b4. I was going to keep it but i had no stringer or anything to hold it in and while my friend was trying to find a piece of 80lb mono leader to string it on, it jumped right out of my hand. I guess it wasn't meant to be.
Another good day @ the reef. |

Fished the reef from dead low yesterday til dark. Had to walk almost all the way out to find a school of blues. They were hitting on almost every cast.DC Minnow lure. Not every cast was a hookup though. The tide was incoming so i had to leave the spot i was at and walk toward shore so my gear wouldnt get washed out. I didnt get a single fish in the hour or so i spent casting above the tideline, but witnessed a few guys wading the area i was coming from catching a lot of blues. By the time the sun was starting to drop under the horizon i had my cooler up on the jetty out of reach of the tide so i walked back out about waist deep. By that time there were small blues everywhere and i was hooking up again along with a few other guys.. 1 guy got a short bass. another guy on the jetty got 2 sea robins who told me last yr he was fishing there with chunk bait @ night and got a huge hit that broke his rod in 3 pieces and broke his reel too, all new that day, lol. 20lb blue maybe? 10pm came and i was out.
Can't wait for those tackle buster blues to come in! |

High tide is close to 10 tonight so be careful there. Bring someone if you can. Walk on the bar on the upside of the current in case you slip you will have plenty of time to right yourself. I wouldn't suggest you go out very far and there's usually fish right off the jetty at high tide. Depends what you are fishing for on what you should bring but be prepared to fish in a strong flow for the first half of the outgoing tide until the bar starts to come up from the water. If its still daylight, i would throw metal lures, poppers. The current may be too strong at that time to fish sluggos or hard plastic swimbaits, but that all depends on your experience i guess. I usually just go there with a deadly dick, a popper, a bucktail, a teaser of some kind (fly or 3" sluggo) and a dc minnow. If you fish bait the jetty is good at high tide. What did you want to catch there by the way? That would help me think of what you might want to bring out. |

Went there on 7/8 in the AM...
First time out to Pennfield...
Launched out of Brewster st. .....
High tide....
I run skinny so I crossed over the bar mid way...
Couple of guys were fly fishing the part closer to sure...
Couple of boats out there....
Birds were working the top water....bunch of sand eels...
Hooked into a few good size blues ...2-4 pound range
Lot more more bait than fish though.....
Fluke were everywhere...hooked into about 10-12....tough finding a keeper though....only one...
Fished the rock piles on the way back in to the launch....caught about 14 porgy...8 keepers...
All in all decent day.....would fish it again.....[/img] |
