RobO and I decided to do some 3 a.m. striper/catfish/carp fishing from shore at the Bissell Bridge, but we determined quickly that the fast current and debris was going to be a big problem. So, we packed up & headed for the Wethersfield Cove instead. We set up shop along the channel that connects the cove to the river...it's a mosquito-ridden, muddy mess but at least the current didn't teleport our bait into the ocean instantaneously.

Brought corn for the carp and bloody chicken dough for the cats, but the nightcrawlers seemed to be popular so we stuck with them. Between us we caught 2 white perch, 1 yellow perch, an eel, a few sunnies, and 8 or so small channel cats like this one:

Oh, I almost forgot about my 2lb 15oz BOWFIN!!!!! Very Happy

Those who know me can verify that I haven't been able to shut up about wanting to catch a bowfin ever since I saw them in the tank at Cabela's. Last year, I tried my luck in the swampy area at Scoville Reservoir with some shredded 17lb. mono as the result. So, yes...it would be fair to say that I was overjoyed to have an unexpected bowfin on my hook.
Awesome fish. Highly recommended, a pleasure to catch, would do business again! A++++++++

The 34" northern pike in my profile pic was caught a wethersfield cove last year. It was like reeling in a log. Great job guys.

P.s. never seen a bow fish before. Never noticed it in the tank at the toy store/hevan/Cabelas.

There's 3 of them in the non-trout tank! You must go there tomorrow and let their undulating dorsal fins hypnotize you...

I think all of our fish were caught with nightcrawlers except for one of Rob's cats (he chopped up his nasty little eel.).

That is an awesome catch turtlekiss! I remember when you first came on the site how pumped you where to try and nail a bowfin.

Do they really fight like a smallie on steriods?

Yeah, it was pretty feisty...darted parallel to the shoreline and got crazy-tangled in the other line I had out. The braid on both lines had to be cut even though my hookset was perfect. It was worth it.

The morning started out with some frustration as we were hoping for some big fish (striper for me, carp/catfish for Kira) on the CTR. The current was really moving and each cast brought in some sort of debris. The river looked like chocolate milk with about a foot of visibility.

So the decision to move to another spot was easy. Kira brought me to a place that looked like a jungle and had mosquito's the size of dragon flies. However she assured me we would catch some fish and she was right. The first thing caught was an eel which then became bait.

It was nice to see a normally subdued and quite Kira show some excitement when she caught that bowfin. I actually even saw a smile Very Happy . It was brief and by the time I got my camera out (to catch the smile on film) her smile was gone.

All in all another enjoyable day fishing!
Thanks Kira.
