Went down behind house to take a few casts in the ct river. First cast wih 4" finess fish and hooked a striper that i chased 200 yards down stream. Fighting overhanging tree limbs and only having 8lb. test i had no chance after the fight reached 15min. my line got tangled in the fith tree and i couldnt free it like the previous trees and watched my last 50 yards go bye bye. What an empty feeling. I think i would of had better chance if river wasnt flowing still high. That was biggest striper i hooked in 20 years on the river. I never gained a inch on the fish. Still fun. |

That's a shame. Let me get your address so I can mail back your lure when I catch that fish... Only joking, I feel your pain. |

It always pays to go overkill and be prepared for anything. I would not use anything less than 17lb test fishing in the river. That 8lb stuff is for trout fishing if you ask me. _________________ Go big or go home! |

8lb test for trout fishing?? Thanks for the laugh.. 4lb for me.
I agree, I always go with at least 20lb test for the river when striper/carp/catfish fishing.
There are some huge fish in that river along with tons of debris and snags. _________________ I'd rather be fishing, than sitting here in front of this computer,,, |

River fish have a lot more fight to them. Especially with the water warming up. I've been using 15lb braid w the smaller baits. was using 10lb mono in the winter though. Sorry to hear of your loss. If it makes you feel better, i lost my biggest striper of the season because i forgot to check my drag. It was too tight and the SOB snapped one of my knots wide open on 25lb test leader. Felt like @ least a 20lber. |
