There's a little park where you can fish with kids that is near my house and I thought it was about time to get one of my 2.75 year old twins a shot at fishing. I took the time to explain about the sharp hooks and how we needed to be very careful and then went to work showing James how to hold the rod and use the reel (a Zebco spincast - not the crappy kids "spiderman" rod, a semi-decent one). He figured it out pretty quickly and so I let him pick a Gulp Alive 2.5 inch minnow out of the "stinky" bucket and I worked it up the hook on a little jighead. I bounced it around a little in the water where he could see it and he seemed to understand. Next, I held the rod with him and let her fly. I told him to reel really slow and went to load up the other rod. I turned around to see the line take off on his rod and ran over to reel down and give it a tug. Fish on!!!! as he was going nuts, I was checking every pocket I had in my shorts, shirts and fly vest looking for my phone (camera). It was then I realized I had left it at home. I was crushed that I wouldn't be able to capture the moment of my son's first fish, but I got back tot he matter at hand. I let him reel the fish right to the short and then grabbed the net and took over. 13 inch rainbow. Huge smile and wide eyes. I showed him how to get his hands wet first so that he wouldn't "hurt the fishy" and showed him how to carefully hold the fish and take the hook out. He wanted to bring him home to show mom, but I explained how we were going to let him go so another little boy would be able to catch him tomorrow. He touched him, said "bye bye fishy" and watched Daddy revive it and let it swim away. Priceless moment. We got another shortly afterward that put on an aerial display that he thought was great. Maybe my best day of fishing EVER. My son got his first fish on his first cast. Congratulations, James. You're an angler for life. |

That's great!
I have to get my daughter on some black crappie while they're still biting. Geez, I hope that they're still biting. . . . _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

Great post and congrats on a perfect sounding day. Camera's are nice but only help the memories. They're still there for you both. |

Nice job Jed. My daughter has come with me a few times with not much luck. She wants me to buy a Kayak for 2, but she not ready for a 8 hour day on the water.

Phish,
That's awesome. I love fishing with my son. Lately he's replace his fishing rod with his skate board.
I'm thinking of running it over. _________________ Sleep...Eat...Fish!!!!! Then do it all over again. |
