Caught my first shad this season today, and missed a pike. Both on a willow leaf.

Where on the Farmington? My guess is downstream from Bart's.

Believe me, if I had the time to spy, I would have been fishing w/ you! I have heard great things about pike fishing that stretch of the river, but have yet to try it. I know a place to park at Loomis and there is a small river/stream that runs to the pond. I have heard that is a good spot, too.

That spot you are talking about is notorious for pike. The canal is filled with perch and baitfish seeking protection from the predators.

I didn't reliaze that stretch runs down behind Loomis. I live off of Kennedy and looking for a good spot to fish, I went down the hiking trail across from Bart's on Easter, but was flooded and behind Bart's was crowded. I also fished further up behind the baseball fields, but the water was running pretty high and fast.

Nice, I was also checking out further down on River Rd.

What do you find to be the best bait or lure for that stretch? I usually fish small brooks and streams for trout, so I am not use to the faster moving parts of the Farmington.

KS,
Most of the time in that stretch of river I use top water. Pencil poppers, Zara Spooks, Atoms etc... . Unweighted Sluggos and Senkos also produce. That stretch has fast water with many rocks as you know, so stay on or near surface with whatever you use. Colors that match the Herring produce the best. Good Luck.

I fished from Barts on Sunday and caught a couple small Alewifes ( I believe) and then I went down behind Loomis and walked into woods alongside the hiking trial and Lacrosse fields. Didn't have much luck, but seen a lot of fish jumping. Lot's of different areas to explore around there. I was going to walk down around the pond , but ran out of time.

I was at Barts on Friday, and Sat, and got nothing as well. I heard a couple of guys talking about them not opening the dam. I think I had my willow leaf set up wrong. I saw people using a type of rig. Do you know anything about that?

I was at Bart's today for about an hour. I only caught Alewife. The rig is 1/2 ounce bead chain weight with approximately 18 to 24" leader followed by your willow leaf. For best results use either gold or silver hammered. I paint the backside in a variety of neon colors. Chartruese and pink have produced best.
