I stopped in southport harbor on tuesday . Saw alewives running up the dam. Pretty sweet.Heard they showed up there a couple weeks ago. Fished with a 7" yellow bomber that night off the bridge and got a small schoolie and 1 that was around 27". Missed around 3 or 4 strikes. Some kids got a keeper around 30" or so on a frozen atlantic herring. Tried there again on friday night 2 hours with live eels, bombers and plastics got nada. Went to the launch @ the mouth of the harbor after that. Had a couple schoolies follow me in but no fish there either. About to walk down there to give it a shot , but this afternoon there were no alewives running, so who knows if the bass will be there. Will report later tonight on this thread.

Just fished real hard for 3 hrs. Threw only bombers. Ended up missing 2 fish on the hook set that surfaced and spit the lure. Had countless "bumps" which must have been herring i ran into. Saw stripers blow up on the bait at least 7 or 8 times. There's always tomorrow to try again. Maybe I'll throw a bait line out next time. |

I may try the mouth of SP harbor in the next few days (I live close by). Do you think throwing 4 inch tsunami shads would be ideal? |

they are worth a throw. Nothing is ideal. Try live eels too. |

Going out again tonight. Gonna throw everything in the arsenal. Got Butterffish and herring to throw out as well while i toss lures. There were fish there last night eating the alewives. I WILL catch a BIG fish this year. It's MY time now.
Happy fishing everyone. |

Are they out in the harbor during day or only night? |

I usually have better luck at night. If you cant do nights try early morning or an overcast day. Usually when the sun is out i have little luck, but i hear of plenty of ppl catching them during the day. |

I went to southport today, caught nothing but saw a very sickly striper in the water. I finished the day by donating a rig to a buoy. Oh well. |

I didn't catch a thing. My friend got a 29.75"er . 4th time in a row i came out skunked. Going tonight for the incoming tide @ around midnight. Hopefully i will get something. I went by there about an hour ago @ low tide and saw 2 schoolies sitting in the flow outside of the bridge.
You saw a sick fish? I caught 1 there last fall that had serious tail rot. Nasty red open sores, at first i thought a blue bit it but it's that disease they carry. The name escapes my mind at the moment. Could you see anything like that on the fish? How did it appear to be sick? |

It seemed to be covered in white dots or something. Where are you fishing? Off the bridge? In the grassy area? Near the mouth? I saw the sick fish in the grassy area, in the middle. Also, what did the 29.75 incher get caught off? |
