It was such a gorgeous day that I had to get out on the water, so I headed down to Derby with asianfisher (aka Billy). We knew that we'd be on the water at the slack high tide, but decided to take a shot at the stripers, anyway. We ended up staying on the water from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. On the one hand, the paddling was easy. On the other hand, unfortunately, the only fish that we saw all day flew by in the talons of an osprey. After we launched under the Route 8 bridge, we headed downstream to the confluence of the Housatonic River with the Naugatuck River. We headed up the Naugy, just past the Metro North railway bridge. The rocky bottom there looks like it just HAS to hold smallies, but I didn't see any. We paddled back into the Housy and up to the restricted area below the dam. We beached our kayaks on the west bank and walked up to the dam. There were several shore fishermen around the dam, but we didn't see a single fish landed, not even a schoolie, although the loons looked like they were doing okay in the whitewater at the base of the middle of the dam. After we relaunched in our kayaks, we drifted back down to the Route 8 bridge. Although we got skunked on the fishing, we still had a great day on the water.

Phil,

Too bad you couldn't come to Pulaski NY this weekend.
The Steelhead are biting ....

Now that's excitement!
