Daryl (aka Daryl), asianfisher (aka Billy), TurtleKiss (aka Kira) and I paddled/pedaled the Housatonic River from Derby in search of striped bass. Daryl paddled El Habañero, Billy paddled his own orange kayak, Kira pedaled The Other Woman and I pedaled my new Hobie i9s (tentatively "My Inflatable Doll" ). We also ran into DaveyDave (aka Dave) and his buddy (aka NY Yankee Dad). Hey, guys! We got on the water by 8:45 am and off by 2:00 pm. It was a gorgeous day, what I consider to be the first Summer day that I've enjoyed this year. Kira ended up with a sunburn and, unfortunately, the only fish. I'm too tired and too busy to write a long report, so here are some videos and photos from our outing. The first is of NY Yankee Dad landing a nice 36 inch striper:
I plan to pick up some Slugos and blueback herring plugs before I go looking for stripers again. I also hope to be in better pedaling shape. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter!

Hey, Derek! The boat launch ramp is just south of the Route 8 bridge. It's almost underneath it. There are two bridges upriver on the way to the dam. The first is a train trestle bridge. No problem. However, I thought that I might not be able to make it past the Bridge Street bridge after I failed to make it through the first two times I tried it. But after Kira powered past me, I chose a better line and made it through. My Inflatable Doll is definitely not as hydrodynamic as The Other Woman. More maneuverable, yes, but faster, no. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter!
Kira gets +10 stealth points for the camo bikini. However the shore fishermen have a keenly developed sense of vision the naturally hones in on dual mound-type patterns. _________________ Daryl

I was trying for smallies with a silver/black rattletrap. The only other hit I got was a bigger striper that held onto it for a few seconds.
I also tried a soft plastic eel on a jighead & I basically ignored the enormous topwater striper plug setup because it was a bitch to cast and retrieve properly while seated. I really didn't have (m)any opportunities to stop pedaling the Hobie and actually fish since standing up negated any forward progress. The current and tide situation absolutely sucked. Never want to go back there.[/url] _________________ Kira

I really wasn't prepared for striper fishing. I threw a soft plastic Sebile Magic Swimmer that was either too small or the wrong color to induce a bite. I also threw a four inch River2Sea Bottom Walker Shad in Stock Trout color.
Dave and NY Yankee Dad told me that I should have used a much larger (e.g., seven or eight inches long) lure and tried to match the hatch with blueback herring colors. They got at least a couple of good sized keepers, so I'd trust them on that one.
Some shore fishermen throwing sandworms also pulled up a few stripers, although I'm not sure that any of them were keepers. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter!
